It takes up very little space in the shed, which is always a bonus when it's already packed to the rafters. We can also store it easily when it's not in use. Ooni's covers can be purchased to fit the oven if you don’t have enough storage. You can also carry the cover with you to the beach, friend's home, or on camping trips.
When the oven arrived at my house, I made a batch of dough, carried it to the roof, and got baking. The rest—trial and error, many pizzas, multiple rooftop parties, lots of compliments, and a declaration that summer 2022 is the summer of pizza, at least at my house—is history.
Ooni has an infrared thermometer that you can use to determine when your oven is ready. After trying the oven several times, I had a pretty good idea of when it was warm enough.
We also replenished the wood pellets needed for the pizza oven. We decided to keep using the Ooni-branded hardwood flakes we were sent originally as they have proven so reliable. We have used the large 10kg bag (PS19.99) of pellets for a while, and it is very affordable to operate the oven.
There is the option of buying an Ooni infrared thermometer if you want to be 100 per cent sure of when it's up to temperature, but although this might be a good gadget to have, I don't feel it's essential for you to enjoy cooking pizzas in the oven. After a couple of times using the oven, I was able to have a good idea of when it was hot enough.
Ooni's pizza oven is hard to miss. The Ooni pizza oven company is based in Scotland and was first introduced in 2012. It has seen tremendous growth in popularity over the years. Five models are available, with prices ranging from $349 to $799. They include gas-powered pizza ovens, such as Ooni Koda 12, and multi-fuel pizza ovens, like the Karu 16. These ovens can be used with propane, wood, charcoal or propane. All models are suitable for outdoor use. It seems that there is an Ooni available for everyone, no matter what outdoor space they have (photos of camping trips cookouts and fire escape pizzas are featured on their Instagram). I chose to make that bet.
I made a batch and brought it to my house. Once the oven arrived, I got baking. The rest--trial, error, many pizzas. Numerous rooftop parties. Lots of compliments. And the declaration that summer 2022 will be the year of pizza.
Ooni is the name to trust when it comes to backyard pizza ovens. Ooni's Fyra 12 (349) is the most affordable model. Ooni also makes the Fyra 12 portable. It is 22-pounds in weight. The Fyra 12 uses dry hardwood pellets to fuel its combustion. These pellets are more easily transported and available at many hardwood stores and grocery stores throughout the U.S.
Only two issues with the overall design. Also, the firebox in back is too small. It makes it difficult to maintain an even flame.
Ooni Fyra's successor to the Ooni 3 oven, which was a very popular model. It burns only wood pellets, and unlike its predecessor, has undergone several performance upgrades. A taller hopper can hold more fuel. There is also a new viewing window. Additionally, the shell retains heat more effectively than the Ooni. Even though they took several attempts to perfect, the pizzas that we made with it were fantastic. Other things we loved were its small cooking surface, its portability, and the ease of assembly. You can also use any type of wood pellets. Although it was easy to light and use, we did have some difficulties with it.
The Ooni Fyra can be cleaned easily - another plus point. Once the oven is cool down (which can take several hours), remove the grate, and then empty the ash. I like to wipe the pizza stones with a kitchen towel to get rid of any food residue. The exterior can be cleaned with a clean cloth and soapy water. It's that simple! It takes little effort.
Ooni has included an inch of opening right beside the handle which is another thing that lacks in their other models. It serves as a peephole, allowing you to keep an eye on pizzas without opening the door, but we could not get a clear view sometimes after cooking a couple of pizzas.
The popularity of outdoor kitchens is increasing, so the demand to have the best pizza oven in your alfresco cooking area isn't slowing down. So, when the Ooni Fyra wooden pellet pizza oven was available for road testing, I jumped at it to see if it was as enjoyable as I imagined.
Before I tested the Ooni Fyra 12, I did not think that this would be the year I mastered making pizza. As a denizen of New York City, I have access to a lot of delicious pizza of all varieties and price points in all directions from my home. Wherever I am there is pizza. So beyond throwing together the occasional cast-iron pie, I never felt the need to employ the skill at home. In particular, I assumed the fancy leopard-spotted wood-fired pizza on offer at my favorite restaurants was well beyond my (and my apartment’s) capabilities. Why attempt something I’d never do half as well as the pros?
Before cooking pizzas in the Ooni Fyra I ran it for 30 minutes at high temperatures and allowed it to cool down, before wiping the inside with dry kitchen towel. Ooni says this is important to do in order to remove any residues from the manufacturing process before cooking in it.
Fyra 12 is great, but there are some caveats. Ooni brand pellets and fire starters must be used. It is however annoying. Your pizza will thank you. When you make a lot of pizzas, it is important to keep the hopper full. These are just a few of the things I recommend, but if you have the patience to remember them, I highly recommend it. It's as easy as a wood-fired oven to use and produces excellent results. It folds up easily for storage. I am looking forward to using the Fyra 12 once more. I am already planning a pizza party for my parents next month. It is truly amazing how it works. I could easily take them to New York City for pizza. However, I now have the ability to make my own homemade pizzas.
Does it deliver high-quality pizza? Is it simple to use? Is it able to travel on its own? To find out, I tried it for over a month.
Only two issues with the overall design. Also, the firebox in back is too small. It makes it difficult to maintain an even flame.
It is important to wait for the oven's temperature to completely cool before you can store the item or place the cover.
You should be aware that when you open the oven door to turn the pizza, or to remove it from the oven, a slight gust in wind can create a small backdraft. Flames could flicker out of the oven's rear. The oven's front is safe for those who are cooking pizzas. However, it might be a good idea to ensure that the oven's back is clear of children.
I would definitely recommend you invest in a good pizza peel though as it would be pretty impossible to cook a pizza in the oven without one. I'm also planning to buy a second one to make it easier to set up a bit of a pizza production line. Not necessary when you're just cooking for a family of four, but when catering for more than that you might find it helpful to be able to prep a pizza on the additional peel while you're using the other peel to get the first pizza in and out of the oven.
Ooni Fyra also has the iconic foldable legs you'll find in every Ooni oven. The compact, portable nature of the Ooni Fyra model is one our favorites. It measures 27.17 x 18 x 10.24 inches. It is compact and can be installed almost anywhere.
The Fyra comes with a door, just like the Ooni 3 & Ooni Karu. This helps in keeping the heat inside the oven. It has a glass-reinforced handle that keeps it cool to the touch even when the door heats up. The door doesn't block the path once it's open. You can place the pizza in the opening by hanging it at the bottom.
Here are some facts that I know about my life. If I were to adopt a dog, these would be the facts that I would give to them: I have a roof where I can use a small charcoal grill. It is not finished and it is a little slanted. There's only one table in the loft. There are no outlets. No gas hookup. It's a place with very few people. I also don't like the idea that a propane tank could be used because they freak me. The less work I have to do to keep the oven burning, the better. With that in mind I looked at Ooni’s Compare Ovens page to determine that the Fyra 12 was the right match.
I read through the guidelines once more and discovered that we should rotate the pizza in the oven after 20 to 30 seconds. This ensures that it cooks evenly. I solved the problem quickly and was soon churning delicious pizzas that were perfectly cooked in about 60 to 90 seconds. These pizzas definitely received a thumbs up from my children.
Once the dough had been rolled, I placed the base of the pizza on the peel. Then, I added the toppings. To prevent your pizza base from sticking to the peel you need to flour it. You can add your preferred toppings, but don't use too much tomato base if it doesn't make for a good pizza. Then slide the pizza onto the stone and bake.
Don't be fooled if it is small. This pizza oven has the ability to make delicious pizzas at a fraction of the cost of traditional pizza restaurants. It's been a wonderful addition to our outdoor entertaining set-up and we cannot wait to get it back in action this spring and into the summer.
Ooni's new model has an inch of opening between the handle and handle. It can be used as a peekhole to allow you to view pizzas through the door. We were unable to get a clear picture sometimes after cooking several pizzas.
Our new pizza door means you can cook without opening and closing the door, so you preserve that all-important convection cell.
Based on the five criteria above price, setup, design, cooking performance, and portability the Ooni Koda 16 is our top pick for outdoor pizza ovens. However, it is more expensive than the Gozney Roccbox, and you'll need to purchase a few accessories, which drives the price up further. 22 Dec 2021
The perfect natural fuel for your pellet-fueled Ooni pizza oven. Our Premium Hardwood Pellets are 100% oak, sourced directly from US forests. They light easily, burn efficiently and produce very little ash waste.
The best wood for an Ooni Oven is the cooking logs made by Smoak Firewood. All of their wood is 100% free from preservatives, kiln-dried for maximum burning, and they offer the wood in five different varieties (white/red oak, maple, hickory, and cherry).
Ooni was founded by Kristian Tapaninaho and Darina Garland, a married couple who were running an education company at the time but were frustrated that they were unable to replicate restaurant-quality pizzas in their oven at home. 1 Nov 2021
How do you clean an OONI pizza stone? Whilst you're cleaning out your pizza oven, you can clean the stone down with a sponge and soapy water. Don't forget to clean both sides and be sure to wash as much of the soap away as possible afterwards. A good old scrub works well!
