Once the dough was rolled out I placed the base onto the pizza peel, before adding the toppings. To prevent your pizza base sticking, make sure that the peel is very well floured. Place your toppings onto your pizza.
The Ooni Fyra boxed pizza oven weighs only a few pounds and is easy to carry around.
You should be aware that when you open the oven door to turn the pizza, or to remove it from the oven, a slight gust in wind can create a small backdraft. Flames could flicker out of the oven's rear. The oven's front is safe for those who are cooking pizzas. However, it might be a good idea to ensure that the oven's back is clear of children.
I highly recommend investing in a quality pizza peel. It would be nearly impossible to cook a delicious pizza in the oven with one without it. I intend to purchase a second one in order to be able to easily set up a line of pizza production. Although it isn't necessary for cooking for a small family of four, catering for larger groups might benefit from having the additional peel so you can prepare the pizzas on one side and the other will be ready for baking.
With that in mind I placed it on a raised wooden dining table on our outdoor space. It is protected by a wall and fence on two sides, making it ideal for keeping out the wind.
Do not be fooled by the small dimensions of this pizza oven. This pizza oven can deliver delicious pizzas as good as any pizza shop. It has been a great addition to our outdoor entertaining area and we are excited to return it to its former glory this spring and summer.
It has been used in all weathers, including during summer's peak in glorious weather and on rainy Saturday nights when we were just looking for a treat. Even in winter, when the fairy lights lit the kitchen, it was as fun as summer. Continue reading to find out how we did it...
There are a few other issues with the Ooni Fyra 12, but they were things that I could have expected and I felt I could deal with. Cleaning the oven can be a bit tedious. After allowing the oven to cool completely, and then disposing of any ashes, wipe down the oven with a dry cloth. To really clean the baking pan, I used a fish spatula with some elbow grease. However, I found that high heat helps to burn any remaining bits.
Let's get this out of your way: outdoor pizza ovens aren't cheap. Even middle-ofthe-road options can range from $500 up to $1,000. The Fyra 12 has a sticker price of $349. That is $50 less than Ooni’s petrol-powered Koda 12 ($399). And it costs $350 more than the Karu 16 ($799). Karu 16 can use different types fuels.
Before I tested the Ooni Fyra 12, I did not think that this would be the year I mastered making pizza. As a denizen of New York City, I have access to a lot of delicious pizza of all varieties and price points in all directions from my home. Wherever I am there is pizza. So beyond throwing together the occasional cast-iron pie, I never felt the need to employ the skill at home. In particular, I assumed the fancy leopard-spotted wood-fired pizza on offer at my favorite restaurants was well beyond my (and my apartment’s) capabilities. Why attempt something I’d never do half as well as the pros?
Ooni Fyra pizza can be cooked outdoors. This tray will be your base for the fire. When the fire has blazed for about 15 minutes (you can look through the peephole in the oven front to see), you will add more fuel to your pellet feeder to ensure there is always fuel flowing into the fire. A pellet hopper that is full will last for around 15 minutes. The fire must be maintained strong by constantly replenishing it. It is best to not forget about it. If you do, your fire will soon become too cold.
Lightweight and compact, the Ooni Fyra 12 portable pizza oven can be toted up and down from the roof when needed. It’s the least expensive model the company currently sells. And best of all, it is fueled by wood pellets taht you feed into a hopper at the back of the oven. No stoking flames, rearranging charcoal or logs, or (god forbid) touching a propane tank in any way.
If you want to increase the heat inside the Ooni Fyra, you can simply adjust the chimney vent. By opening the vent and ensuring the chimney cap is removed, it will naturally increase the airflow inside the body of the oven and as a result boost the internal temperature.
These are facts about me that would make buying an outdoor pizza oven like adopting a puppy. I have a roof I can access that allows me to use a small charcoal grill occasionally, but it's unfinished and a bit slanted. There's a table there, but it's all. There are no outlets. There is no gas hookup. You will feel a lot more peaceful here. A propane tank is something I don't like because it freaks me out. The more I can do to keep the oven running and lit, the better. With this in mind, Ooni's Compare Ovens page was helpful and I found the Fyra 12 to be the right match.
Don't be fooled if it is small. This pizza oven has the ability to make delicious pizzas at a fraction of the cost of traditional pizza restaurants. It's been a wonderful addition to our outdoor entertaining set-up and we cannot wait to get it back in action this spring and into the summer.
Does it deliver high-quality pizza? It is easy to use. Can it be used on the road? To find out, I used it for over a full month.
It's difficult to tell when your pizza oven is ready to cook because it doesn't have a built-in thermometer. However, I found that 15 minutes was enough time for it to heat up in most conditions. It's possible to see rolling flames through the viewing window. This is a good indicator that it's ready to cook.
The Ooni Fyra 12 makes great pizza. No matter what dough you use (I've tried several homemade recipes) the results are perfect. They cook quickly and can be spotted, puffed, and spotted. This oven is great for a casual dinner or as the centerpiece for a party. Once you are comfortable with your own system and best practices, it can be a joy to use. Because the oven is compact, it can easily be stored in its box which is small and stackable. I'm a huge fan of Ooni and other small kitchen gadgets. It was also a great addition to my home.
The Ooni Fyra oven is the successor to the Ooni 3 which was one of the company’s most popular models. Unlike its predecessor, it uses only wood pellets as the fuel source and has also been updated with several performance improvements plus a more innovative design. Some of the upgrades include a taller hopper to hold more fuel, a new viewing hole, and a robust shell that retains more heat than the Ooni 3. The pizzas we made with it were so good although it took a few tries to get them right. Other things we liked were the modest cooking surface it offers, the compact and portable nature of it, and the fact that it’s easy to assemble and that you can use almost any type of wood pellets. We did find it slightly tricky to light and use at first though.
But, at the end of it all, the Fyra 12's real question is whether or not the Fyra 12 can cook high-quality pizza. The answer is a clear yes, provided you're willing to work around its limitations.
It takes up minimal space in our shed (which is always a benefit when it's already up to the roof), and can be easily stored when not being used. Ooni can make a cover for your oven that will fit into any available storage. You can carry it with you on trips to the beach, friends' houses, and even camping.
These characteristics combined make the Fyra 12 a popular choice for several types of cooks.
You can see that the Ooni Fyra has received over 1000 reviews from users on the Ooni site. Many people praise the ease of setting it up, its high-quality materials, and its portability. It is evident that the quality of the cooked pizzas impressed people.
The Ooni Fyra 12 portable, lightweight pizza oven can be carried up and down from your roof. It's currently the most affordable model. It is powered by wood pellets that are fed into a hopper in the oven's back. No need to light flames, arrange logs or charcoal, or (God forbid!) touch a gas tank.
You will find out how the Ooni Fyra 12 wood stove pellet pizza oven works and where it is most effective.
Cleaning the Ooni Fyra is easy - another selling point. After the oven has cooled, which can take up to an hour, you can remove the grate from the oven and empty the ash. To remove food residue, I wipe down the pizza stone with a dry kitchen towel. You can wipe the exterior with a damp cloth and soapy warm water. That's all there is to it! This takes very little effort.
What they it's all feel, and the learning curve is steep. My theory: a lot of that comes down to the small fire box mentioned in the previous section.
Fyra 12 is not the oven for those who are looking to make large quantities of pie. This oven is only suitable for small groups. The ash buildup from three to four pies made it difficult for the oven to reach 500 degrees Fahrenheit. The result? Pizzas that were too slow to cook and that didn't have the right texture.
Ooni is an outdoor pizza oven company based in Edinburgh, Scotland. The ovens are designed in Scotland but made in China. Ooni launched the world's first portable wood-pellet fired pizza oven in 2012.
