Adjusting the chimney vent will allow you to increase the heat in your Ooni Fyra. It is possible to increase the oven's temperature by opening the vent and removing the chimney cover.
The best thing about the oven is its ease of use. You'll enjoy consistent high temperatures, if you don't forget to fill the hopper as I did once. Although I was nervous about the Fyra's ability to get the pizza out of the peel, and not being able to maneuver the pie around the oven properly, the whole process was easy. You can enjoy all the delicious flavors of live fire without ever having to interact with it.
But the Ooni pizza oven wave has been a tough one to ignore. The Scotland-based company, which burst onto the scene with their first model in 2012, has exploded in popularity in recent years. It now offers five models that range in price from $349 to $799, from gas-powered pizza ovens like the Ooni Koda 12 to multi-fuel pizza ovens like the Karu 16 that are compatible with wood, charcoal, and propane. All are only suitable for outdoor use. From the marketing, it would seem that no matter the outdoor space you have access to (photos of fire escape pizzas and camping trip cookouts adorn their Instagram) and your comfort level with live fire cooking, there is an Ooni for you. I decided to take that bet.
All these attributes make Fyra 12 appealing to a few different types of cooks.
This pizza oven is a great product and I agree with it. It is easy to assemble, takes up very little space, and can be easily moved around the garden. This would work well on a small balcony or patio. The wood pellets are lightweight and don't require much storage space. You can cook your favorite pizza recipes quickly and easily with this wood pellet.
The Ooni Fyra 12 portable, lightweight pizza oven can be carried up and down from your roof. It's currently the most affordable model. It is powered by wood pellets that are fed into a hopper in the oven's back. No need to light flames, arrange logs or charcoal, or (God forbid!) touch a gas tank.
There's definitely a knack to doing this to ensure you get the pizza off the peel in one piece without losing your toppings (and patience). Gently shuffling it off the peel is the best way and you soon get the knack of it after a few tries.
Ooni has added an inch to the handle. This is something they do not have in their other models. It acts as a peephole and allows you to check on pizzas without opening your door. But sometimes, it was difficult to see clearly after we had cooked a few pizzas.
Before I tested the Ooni Fyra 12, I did not think that this would be the year I mastered making pizza. As a denizen of New York City, I have access to a lot of delicious pizza of all varieties and price points in all directions from my home. Wherever I am there is pizza. So beyond throwing together the occasional cast-iron pie, I never felt the need to employ the skill at home. In particular, I assumed the fancy leopard-spotted wood-fired pizza on offer at my favorite restaurants was well beyond my (and my apartment’s) capabilities. Why attempt something I’d never do half as well as the pros?
First, remove the chimney cap. Next, take off the chimney cap and fill it with hardwood pellets. To get started, I used approximately two dozen hardwood pellets following the instructions. Next, add a firelighter (I used Ooni firelighters which were provided), and light it. Finally, push the grate into place in the back of your pizza oven.
Ooni is the name to trust when it comes to backyard pizza ovens. Ooni's Fyra 12 (349) is the most affordable model. Ooni also makes the Fyra 12 portable. It is 22-pounds in weight. The Fyra 12 uses dry hardwood pellets to fuel its combustion. These pellets are more easily transported and available at many hardwood stores and grocery stores throughout the U.S.
However, if you have a big family or plan to make pizza the focal point of your next dinner party, I highly recommend going with a gas-powered option like the Koda 12. It will set you back an extra $50, and you'll forfeit some of the portability inherent with pellets, but you'll enjoy yourself, and your company, a whole lot more.
These accessories can quickly add to the cost of your pizza oven though, so although they are great additions to your outdoor cooking setup if you have the budget, they're not all essential.
The Ooni Fyra 12 makes great pizza. The results can be made with any type of dough (I have tried both store-bought and homemade), and they are crispy, spotty, and ready in no time. Once you have mastered your system and are familiar with best practices, it's great for entertaining two or three and as the centerpiece of a party. Its compact size means that it can be stored in its small, stackable box when it is not needed. I am a big fan of Ooni ovens, but I hate large kitchen appliances and one-trick kitchen gadgets. I was pleasantly surprised at how much I loved it and how easily I found space in my home for it.
Ooni suggests that your pizza oven should be placed in an area that is protected from wind, and at least 3ft (1m) from any structures. This will ensure the best results. It should be placed on wooden or stone, marble, or stainless steel surfaces, according to Ooni.
Since receiving our Ooni Fyra pizza oven, we've since spent many an afternoon and evening having garden pizza parties as a family, and when lockdown rules allowed us to welcome other people into our garden too we happily cooked pizzas for everyone with ease.
Before I cooked pizzas in the Ooni Fyra, I heated it for 30 minutes at high heat and let it cool down before wiping it with a kitchen towel. Ooni states that this is necessary to get rid of any residues during manufacturing before you cook in it.
The pizza oven arrived in an extremely compact box, which was very easy to transport to the garden. I was amazed by the compact packaging and couldn't believe the entire pizza oven was inside.
All-natural fire starters (and organic wood pellets) were purchased at a local hardware store for my maiden pizza expedition. They initially seemed to work well. However, the oven didn't reach the required temperatures and each pizza took longer than 4-6 minutes. I found that the Ooni brand starter and hardwood wood pellets lit up faster than my oven and cooked the same dough in less time (1-2 minutes).
It was a real bummer that my Ooni arrived with plans to make pizza that same day. However, I discovered that I didn’t have the right materials. Ooni will not ship a pizza peel, so be sure to choose a model that's thin and narrow enough to fit your pizza. I really liked this one. While you could probably use a wood peel to make it work, I found I needed the thinness in metal to be able to maneuver.
Ooni is the leader in backyard pizza ovens. Its Fyra 12 (349) is its most affordable model. Ooni's most mobile option is the Fyra 12. It weighs 22 lbs and uses dry hardwood chips as its fuel source. They are easy to transport and readily available in grocery and hardwood stores all over the U.S.
Fyra 12 should be avoided by cooks who wish to bake pies for large gatherings. This oven is best for small groups. Even then, the oven could not reach temperatures higher than 500 F due to the huge amount of ash that had built up after three to four pies. The result? It took longer to make pizzas and they didn't turn out the right texture.
Like any pizza oven, however, the Fyra 12 also needs fuel. And fuel costs money. Ooni sells 20 pound bags for $25. But there are many cheaper options available and any brand will work. Also, don't forget to pick up some fire starters.
The Ooni Fyra is very similar to its predecessors as well as the new Ooni models. It still retains the Ooni Fyra's classic dome shape which is a hallmark design of Ooni pizzeria ovens. It is similar to Ooni Karu's and Ooni 3 models in that it has a chimney.
There's definitely a knack to doing this to ensure you get the pizza off the peel in one piece without losing your toppings (and patience). Gently shuffling it off the peel is the best way and you soon get the knack of it after a few tries.
It takes up very little space in the shed, which is always a bonus when it's already packed to the rafters. We can also store it easily when it's not in use. Ooni's covers can be purchased to fit the oven if you don’t have enough storage. You can also carry the cover with you to the beach, friend's home, or on camping trips.
I will admit it, the first few pizzerias I tried didn't come out as I expected. They were burned on the edges and not cooked well on the inside. My experience was not good. The general consensus was, "These aren't as tasty as the ones at Franco Manca."
It's difficult to tell when your pizza oven is ready to cook because it doesn't have a built-in thermometer. However, I found that 15 minutes was enough time for it to heat up in most conditions. It's possible to see rolling flames through the viewing window. This is a good indicator that it's ready to cook.

The Fyra is also great for cooking steak, bread, meat, vegetables, and more. You'll be blown away not only by what all you can cook in an Ooni Fyra, but the flavor that the wood pellets and high temperatures add to your food. The Ooni Fyra preheats in 15 minutes, which is comparable to the average kitchen oven. 24 Jan 2021
If it did not get crispy, you did a good job doing a neapolitan pizza, because this is not supposed to get crispy but to stay soft. If you want a crispy pizza, go for a 2-3 min bake at 650-700F. The faster you bake, the softer it'll be! 21 May 2020
The Ooni is a portable, outdoor pizza oven. It heats up to about 950 degrees in 20 minutes and can cook your pizza in 60 seconds. It has a pizza stone inside that gives you that delicious, crispy crust of a traditional wood-fired pizza oven. 14 Sept 2021
If you invest in an outdoor pizza oven, and you definitely should, you want to make the most out of it and use it year-round, even in the winter. Using an outdoor pizza oven in the winter is doable and fun. 1 Feb 2022
