To cook with the Ooni Fyra pizza oven, you must set it up outdoors on a flat surface light the fire starter and slide the tray back into the body of the oven. This will be the base of your fire. After it’s blazing (15-ish minutes, you can peek through a peephole at the front of the oven to check), you’ll add more fuel to the pellet hopper to keep a constant flow of fuel feeding down into the fire. A hopper full of pellets lasts about 15 minutes, and you must constantly replenish it if you want the fire to stay strong. Forget about it for too long and the temperature will drop, which cannot be fixed by simply adding more pellets.
You do need to wait for the oven to cool down completely before storing it or placing the cover on it.
I would definitely recommend you invest in a good pizza peel though as it would be pretty impossible to cook a pizza in the oven without one. I'm also planning to buy a second one to make it easier to set up a bit of a pizza production line. Not necessary when you're just cooking for a family of four, but when catering for more than that you might find it helpful to be able to prep a pizza on the additional peel while you're using the other peel to get the first pizza in and out of the oven.
Ooni Fyra can be used to cook pizza. This will be the base of the fire. You will then add more fuel in your pellet hopper so that there is always enough fuel going down to the fire. You need to replenish your hopper with pellets every 15 minutes. Don't forget it! The temperature will drop and you cannot fix it by adding more pellets.
The chimney vent can be adjusted to increase the heat within the Ooni Fyra. You can open the vent by removing the chimney cap. This will naturally increase the airflow within the oven, and thus raise the internal temperature.
The oven door has a viewing hole that allows you to inspect the oven to ensure it is burning properly. Once the first batch of pellets have been lit and are burning well, add more pellets in the fuel hopper to the top of an oven until you're satisfied with the amount. The hopper automatically inserts the pellet into oven. To maintain the oven temperature you need to fill the hopper with pellets. A full hopper of pellets can last about 15 minutes.
First, remove the chimney cap. Next, take off the chimney cap and fill it with hardwood pellets. To get started, I used approximately two dozen hardwood pellets following the instructions. Next, add a firelighter (I used Ooni firelighters which were provided), and light it. Finally, push the grate into place in the back of your pizza oven.
What does this all mean for the end-user? The Fyra 12 consumes a lot more pellets than it needs. The proper flame to cook more than one pizza takes away from the main pizza making process.
The assembly of the Ooni Fyra Pizza Oven was easy. This assembly was easy for me as I have zero patience with following instructions (my Ikea flatpack meltdowns were quite legendary in my house).
It is necessary to wait until the oven has cooled completely before you store it or place the cover.
Fyra 12 isn't the right oven for anyone who dreams of making pies at a large party. This oven is for small groups. However, even after making three or four pies, the ash buildup was so great that the oven couldn't reach 500F. The result? Pizzas that took longer and were not the right texture.
Cleaning the Ooni Fyra is easy - another selling point. After the oven has cooled, which can take up to an hour, you can remove the grate from the oven and empty the ash. To remove food residue, I wipe down the pizza stone with a dry kitchen towel. You can wipe the exterior with a damp cloth and soapy warm water. That's all there is to it! This takes very little effort.
It's all about how they feel. The learning curve is steep. My theory is that a lot of it comes down to the small firebox mentioned in the previous section.
The popularity of outdoor kitchens is increasing, so the demand to have the best pizza oven in your alfresco cooking area isn't slowing down. So, when the Ooni Fyra wooden pellet pizza oven was available for road testing, I jumped at it to see if it was as enjoyable as I imagined.
Amazing stuff. It took just 10 minutes to set everything up, unpack everything and read the instructions.
Ooni Fyra cleaning can be very easy. After the oven cools down, which can take some time, remove the grates and empty out the ashes. To get rid of food residue, I tend to wipe down my pizza stone with a damp kitchen towel. You can also wipe down the exterior of the pizza stone with a soft cloth and soapy tap water. That's it! It is very easy to do.
Does it deliver high-quality pizza? Is it easy to use? Can it actually go on the road? I tested one for more than a month to find out.
Once the dough was rolled out, I placed the base on the pizza peel before adding the toppings. You need to make sure the peel is really well floured to avoid your pizza base sticking to it. Add your chosen toppings (go light on the tomato base if you don't want a soggy pizza) and then slide your pizza onto the stone in the oven.
The Ooni Fyra 12 only has some minor drawbacks, but these are things I could have anticipated. I was able to live with them. For example, cleaning the oven can be tedious. After cooling the oven completely, take out the ashes and clean it with a dry, non-toxic cloth. Finally, use a pizza brush or a scraper to remove any remaining food and debris. I had to use elbow grease and a fish spatula to clean the baking dish. However, by flipping the pan for the next cook (as advised), the high heat helped to melt any remaining food particles.
Ooni advises that the best place for your pizza oven is a location that is protected from wind and 3ft (1m away from structures) for best results. The manual recommends that the pizza oven be placed on wooden, stone or marble surfaces.
The Ooni Fyra 12 portable pizzeria oven is lightweight and compact. It is currently the most affordable model in the company's range. You can fuel it with wood pellets which you put in a hopper at your oven's back. There are no flames to ignite, logs or charcoal to arrange, and you should not touch a propane tank.
Ooni's cheapest oven for pizza is great fun. For some, the learning curve might be too steep.
Ooni Fyra cleaning is very simple - another advantage. Once the oven has cooled (which can be a few hours), you can simply take out the grate and empty any ash. I use a dry kitchen towel to clean the pizza stone. You can clean the exterior using a moist cloth and soapy hot water. That's it! It requires very little effort.
The Ooni Fyra boxed pizza oven weighs only a few pounds and is easy to carry around.
The Ooni Fyra pre-packaged pizza oven is lightweight, so it's easy to take out in the garden.
Fyra 12 isn't the right oven for anyone who dreams of making pies at a large party. This oven is for small groups. However, even after making three or four pies, the ash buildup was so great that the oven couldn't reach 500F. The result? Pizzas that took longer and were not the right texture.
The pizza oven arrived in a compact box that was really easy to carry out to the garden. I was impressed by how small the packaging was and couldn’t believe there was an entire pizza oven inside.
Ooni's lowest pizza oven is a lot more fun than it sounds. The learning curve for some cooks may prove too steep.
How much fuel do I need? Ooni 3 burns hardwood pellets at around 1kg (or 2lbs) per hour. The 10kg (22lbs) bag of pellets available on ooni.com is good for around 10-12 hours of cooking. That's a lot of 60 second pizzas! 17 June 2021
Then, if you really want to, you can wipe out the inside with a dry cloth or paper towel (but only once your oven is completely cool). If you've got really stubborn bits, once your oven cools, very carefully remove your baking stone, flip it over and place it back in your oven.
The Ooni Fyra is an easy model to assemble and use, it's great for beginners who are interested in an entry level pizza oven. It doesn't use logs or gas, instead it uses wood pellets that are fed through a hopper into the oven, so once lit, there's no complications of managing the flames, or how to keep it going.
Our Favorite Fuel for the Ooni Pizza Oven Don't worry about the flavor of wood chips. We usually get hickory or mesquite, but since the pizzas cook so fast, you won't taste a difference. 27 June 2019
If Ooni Fyra is not running hot enough, check that your chimney vent is open and chimney cap is removed. This will provide maximum airflow and top temperatures through the oven.
Can you Use Wood Chips in Ooni? You can use wood chips or chunk wood with your Ooni, but don't worry substantially about which flavor of wood you utilize. Hickory and mesquite woods are the most popular, but the pizzas don't cook long enough to absorb any intricate flavor from the wood.
