Summary: Ten members of the Student Chapter participated in the college’s Big Event, a day dedicated to volunteering around town to help clean up community members’ yards. Summary: Owner Richard Heinicke showed students blacksmithing skills and techniques, and offered his tongs and hammer to student Rick Laurence, who found blacksmithing much harder than he’d expected. Presenter: Donald Wensink, chairman, Manitowoc Cranes Summary: The Section awarded its annual scholarships to current or future welding students. MADISON/BELOIT April 27 Location: Blackhawk Technical College, Milton, Wis. Topic: SkillsUSA welding competition, postsecondary level Summary: The college’s Advisors Jeremiah Johnson and Mark Prosser oversaw this year’s event, which hosted 29 students from eight different technical colleges. The Section would like to thank Technical Chair Chad Hendzel, Robinson Metals, for prepping all metal used for the competition. Congratulations to Isaac Vania from NWTC, who advanced to the Nationals in Louisville, Ky. Welding processes used for the competition included: GMAW on steel, FCAW using a shielding gas, SMAW, and GTAW on aluminum. NEW JERSEY April 20 Location: Snuffy’s Pantagis Presenter: Nagesh Goel, AEIS, Atlas Evaluation and Inspection Service Topics: Phased array ultrasonic testing in lieu of radiographic testing Summary: Goel gave a presentation on the present state of phased array ultrasonic testing and how it is becoming more cost-effective and a better alternative to radiographic testing. Jim Dolan received a belated District Meritorious Award. RACINE/KENOSHA April 8 Location: Putzmeister America, Inc., Sturtevant, Wis. Presenter: Don Gerou, product performance manager Summary: District 12 held its annual meeting at the company, where they were treated to a tour, followed by a banquet and awards ceremony at the Roma Lodge. Bill Dawson was awarded the District Meritorious Award, Rich Hemler was awarded Instructor of the Year Award, and Shaun Walker was awarded CWI of the Year.
