Event: The Section’s 24th Annual Scholarship Fundraiser Golf Tournament Summary: Forty golfers participated in the four-person scramble event, which, along with donations from the hole sponsors, helped the Section raise more than $2000 for the welding student scholarship fund. The Section would like to extend its thanks to all participants and hole sponsors that made the event a success: Crumpton Welding Supply, KTA Steel Group, Tampa Steel Erecting Co., Rapid Metals, Pinellas Technical Education Center, International Ship Repair, Lincoln Electric, Norton Saint-Gobain Abrasives, Miller Electric, Erwin Technical College, and Uniweld Products, Inc. NORTH CENTRAL FLORIDA May 10 Location: Valencia College Advanced Manufacturing Center, Kissimmee, Fla. Summary: The Section’s annual election of officers was called to order by Chairman Chris Owen. Secretary Bill Myers gave the list of nominees for the officers: Howard Record, chairman; Josh Esposito, first vice chairman; Ed Miszczak, second vice chairman; Bill Myers, secretary; Chris Utman, treasurer; Chris Owen, past chairman; and Mark Geiger, member-at-large. Thirty-one members and students attended the event. J. T. Mahoney gave a presentation on why you should be an AWS member. Jason Becker described and demonstrated some of the machine tools, welding robot, SECTION NEWS and plasma cutting devices used in the Advanced Manufacturing Center. SOUTH FLORIDA February 10 Location: McFatter Tech, Davie, Fla. Presenter: Bill Gardner, senior product manager of safety and health, Miller Electric Topic: Welding safety and practices Summary: Gardner provided valuable information pertaining to codes for the safety of a welding facility. April 20 Location: McFatter Tech, Davie, Fla., and Robert Morgan Tech, Miami, Fla. Presenters: Steve Voight, Magne Gas, and Justin Mango, Norton Abrasives Topic: Introduction to alternative fuel, and explanation on polishing mill finish stainless steel Summary: Voight spoke about a hydrogen based alternative fuel that he suggested will replace acetylene. Mango gave a hands-on presentation on polishing mill-finish stainless steel.
