SECTION NEWS Topic: Boy Scouts Merit Badge Training Summary: DeVargas and Betts conducted training for Troops 3 and 143, Mobile, Ala., to earn their welding merit badges. The instructors were assisted by students Thor Broadhead and Zach Manderson. April 14 Location: The Original Oyster House, Spanish Fort, Ala. Presenter: Thomas B. Bender Jr., retired president and CEO, Bender Shipbuilding & Repair Topic: History of shipbuilding on the Mobile River Summary: Clay Byron welcomed members and introduced the speaker. Bender spoke about the history of shipbuilding in the area dating back to the late 1800s. A “split the pot” draw and door prizes raised $110 for the Section. Forty people were in attendance. NEW ORLEANS May 17 Location: Best Western Landmark Hotel, Metairie, La. Presenter: Tony DeMarco, DeMarco Welding Services Topic: The Art of Lead Welding Summary: The Section’s annual student appreciation night meeting was well attended. DeMarco gave an informative presentation on the art of lead welding, and a 50/50 raffle was held, with proceeds donated to student Section activity.
