Serving Rockingham, Augusta, and the surrounding counties.
Along with our helpers manning
registration, we had our continuing
education program and, in one
of those slots, we were supposed
to cover the fraud aspects of the
Equifax hacking, but our scheduled
speaker, Virginia State Police Special
Agent Scott Mitchell, just two days
before, had been advised of a death
in his father’s family which obligated
his attendance at a memorial service
in East Tennessee at the very hour
of his expected presentation. With
time ticking away toward an empty
slot in our education offerings
that day, assistance was sought
from local American-National
University’s John Keriazakos. He put
us in touch with Christopher Fielder,
Senior Technical Trainer for IR and
Forensics, with Carbon Black, a web
security consulting firm. A consultant
with the U.S. Air Force for 18 years,
Christopher presented in the
Director’s Boardroom an absolutely
enlightened view from the self-protection
side of the cyber-security
topic, and everyone was left wishing
for more time to benefit from his
expertise.
At the same time, Chris Slemp,
IAAI-CFI, CFEI, Fire Investigator
with Donan Engineering, provided
a detailed breakdown of modern
arson investigation techniques
and equipment in a PowerPoint
presentation in the Mnemonic
Theater next door, and he provided
an excellent, thoughtful close to our
2017 Educational Program.
Immediately following the last of our
four seminars for the weekend, we
moved to the Mnemonic Theater for
the Annual Meeting and the various
reports of committees and an update
from each active local association;
from Hampton Roads, Lynchburg,
Mid-Valley, Peninsula, Richmond and
Roanoke. Our last activity was the
report of the Nominating Committee,
followed by the Election of Officers as
follows:

Following the adjournment, a

a quick bus ride to our Saturday
afternoon conference activity, which
was centered in the Grandin Village
