He was drafted into the Union army and fought in several battles, including Gettysburg, where he was injured. Hanson started a business at 44 S. Clark St., Chicago, Ill., producing the same hand cut stencils he made in Denmark. Six years later, the Great Chicago Fire destroyed almost all his work. He rebuilt the company at 303 E. Erie. Requiring more space, the company moved to Franklin Park, and in 2006, to its present Naperville location. “My great grandfather built the company on the principles of faith, hard work, and quality. These core values continue to guide us today and have enabled us to grow and expand,” said Andrew Hanson, vice president of marketing. He attributes the company’s longevity to its ability to innovate products and merchandising methods.
