Concrete beams can be strengthened with steel reinforcement rods. A beam is subject to tension at the bottom and compression at its top. Concrete is strong enough to withstand great compression but very fragile when it experiences tension.

A 10mm diameter bar can be used to reinforce a beam's longitudinally, but this all depends on the beam's size, span, and the load placed over it. The designer determines the steel cross-section area required when designing.

IS-456 (2000) Clause 29 states that a supported beam can be classified as deep if the ratio of its effective span to its overall depth D is less then 2. Continuous beams are classified as deep if the ratio L/D falls below 2.5. The centre-t is the measure of effective span.

The maximum concrete aggregate size will determine the spacing between bars in a beam. Between the bars, the minimum spacing can be between 50 and 75 mm.

The Beam L/D Ratio Diagnostic is used to display a plot of the length/diameter of all the beam elements in the model. The optimal L/D ratio to cool channel-related beam elements is 2.5. Solver convergence warnings may be issued if the L/D ratio is significantly lower.
