Summary: More than 70 members and guests enjoyed the annual Tidewater Section fish fry at historic Fort Monroe. The Section also presented and elected officers for the 2016–2017 season. September 8 Location: Thomas Nelson Community College, Hampton, Va. Presenter: Galen White, senior welding engineer and product specialist, Hobart Aluminum Topic: Unique challenges in welding aluminum Summary: White spoke at the Section’s September meeting about ways to overcome problems faced when welding aluminum. More than 26 members and guests were in attendance. District 5 Joseph T. “J. Presenter: Frank Babish, technical manager, welding and wire, Sandvik Corp. Topic: Welding of stainless steels Summary: Following a safety talk by Babish, Section Chairman Howard Record introduced new District 5 Director J. T. Mahoney who gave a presentation on how to apply for AWS National and District scholarships. Mahoney then presented the Section CWI of the Year Award to Greg Hoffmann, welding engineer at E-One; District Educator of the Year Award to Jason Becker, senior welding instructor at Valencia College; and the Section Meritorious Award to Bill Seyfarth, Section past treasurer. In addition, Section bylaws were approved during the meeting. District 6 Michael Krupnicki, director (585) 705-1764 mkrup@mahanyweld.com NORTHERN NEW YORK October 4 Location: USS Slater DE766, Albany, N.Y. Presenter: Doug Tanner, USS Slater volunteer Summary: Tanner spoke to Section members about hull repair completions on the USS Slater, including installation of anodes to protect the ship from corrosion. Following the presentation, members were taken on a tour. ROCHESTER August Location: Arc + Flame Center, Rochester, N.Y. Summary: Thirteen high school students from the Rochester City School District were paid through Rochester- Works to complete a 120-h welding and life skills program at the Rochester Arc + Flame Center. For six weeks, the youth employees learned welding, marketing, personal finance, and other life skills. The students also created three welded metal sculptures that were donated to the Strong National Museum of Play, Youth Services Department (City of Rochester, N.Y., Mayor’s Office), and RochesterWorks.
