In the midst of the Jazz Age, pathologists formed ASCP in 1922 to advance the Knowledge of pathologists,
whose profession was still in its infancy and barely recognized by physicians.
During ASCP’s first 90 years, progress and innovation have always gone hand-in-hand.
Among our many achievements, ASCP:
- Established the first certification agency for laboratory professionals in 1928.
- In 1931, published the first issue of the renowned American Journal of Clinical Pathology.
- Created the American Board of Pathology in 1934 to set standards of competency and education for pathologists.
- Created the College of American Pathologists in 1946 to spearhead more commercial activities, such as the laboratory accreditation program.
- Became the lead sponsor and organizer for National Medical Laboratory Week in 1977.
At 90 years, ASCP remains unique among professional medical societies for representing the entire laboratory team. Here’s to the next 90 years to bring even greater scientific discoveries, innovations, and interconnection among physicians, healthcare providers, and patients worldwide.
