BEHIND THE PHOTO
Hong Kong's dramatic
cityscape has a faded,
timeworn appearance when
reflected on distressed walls.
Inset: the lensman at work
The technique
Heijnen creates his oneiric
images by using only a
camera and glass panel. The
glass panel is placed in front
of a weathered wall so that
it captures the reflection of
nearby buildings, while the
texture behind the glass is still
visible. He only ever shoots
with natural light, during the
last 20 minutes of daylight.
“The challenge is to find
the twomain elements
of thework: a textured
surface and cluster of
buildings in one location,
with just the right distance
and angle. And then hope
for light to cooperate”
