Human Elements of Fringe

Our guide to the FBI agents, mad scientists and other odd balls of Fringe

By Jon Lachonis

If it has the name JJ Abrams on it, you can be sure there is an ensemble of interesting people - and Fringe is no exception. If you're going to be investigating offenses against nature centered on topics like teleportation, human experimentation, ESP and telekinesis, the characters have to be a bit more than "interesting" to keep up with the subject matter, they have to be fantastic. Abrams and company have come up with a group of individuals both uniquely qualified to investigate the unknown and well drawn enough to keep us dramatically bound to the human element of the show.

Who is Peter Bishop

Peter is the embodiment of "too smart for their own good." Packing an IQ of over 190, the smug young brainiac has given up on structured education and instead gleams his advanced knowledge of chemistry, engineering, and genetics from good old fashioned reading.

As anybody knows, book smarts will only take you so far - a fact that those close to Peter - particularly various ex-business partners - are all too aware of. Peter has lived as a sort of noble transient, constantly jetting away from his own trail, plugging big money deals along the way. While gambling debts have been mentioned at one time or another, it seems that Peter's biggest problem may be never sticking around long enough to finish anything.

Peter enters the Fringe scene as a means to an end when Olivia Dunham seeks to speak with the institutionalized genius Walter Bishop - Peter's father. Peter joins her under duress, convinced that she will turn him over to those who are pursuing him. By the episode "The Arrival," Peter's free spirit begins to diminish and he becomes more dedicated to understanding "The Pattern." It was revealed in the same episode that both Peter and Walter both died in a car accident, but were revived by The Observer.

Who Plays Peter Bishop?

Joshua Jackson is most commonly known as the snide "Pacey Witter" from Dawson's Creek, excellent preparation for the equally sarcastic Peter Bishop. Aside from Dawson's Creek, Jackson has appeared in a string of genre ventures including Scream 2, Shutter, and Apt Pupil.

Our Theory on Peter Bishop

Since Peter's bungled business deals have always centered on science in some way, particularly chemistry or engineering, it is only a matter of time before we find out that he has been materially connected with key players.
