Human Elements of Fringe

Our guide to the FBI agents, mad scientists and other odd balls of Fringe

By Jon Lachonis

If it has the name JJ Abrams on it, you can be sure there is an ensemble of interesting people - and Fringe is no exception. If you're going to be investigating offenses against nature centered on topics like teleportation, human experimentation, ESP and telekinesis, the characters have to be a bit more than "interesting" to keep up with the subject matter, they have to be fantastic. Abrams and company have come up with a group of individuals both uniquely qualified to investigate the unknown and well drawn enough to keep us dramatically bound to the human element of the show.

Who is John Scott?

John Scott is an outstanding FBI agent hiding a secret love affair with fellow agent Olivia Dunham. In the pilot episode of Fringe, John is exposed to synthetic chemicals when Richard Steig blows up his secret laboratory at a self-storage facility. The exposure causes John's skin to begin to dissolve.

After he is saved by Walter Bishop, John kills Steig at the hospital to conceal a connection between the two. Later, during a high-speed pursuit where he is being chased by Olivia, John tries to run her off the road and in the process flips his own vehicle. As he is succumbing to his injuries he warns Olivia, leading her to wonder why they were sent to the self-storage facility to begin with.

John's body wound up in the possession of Massive Dynamic and Nina Sharp, who insinuated that he would be questioned using the process of Synaptic Transfer. Since then John has been seen twice, once at the end of the episode "The Ghost Network" where it appeared his brain may be in the process of downloading, and again at the end of "The Arrival" where he apparently resurfaced, alive.

Who Plays John Scott?

Whether it be as Brad Chase on three seasons of Boston Legal, or the voice of the Cyclops in Shrek III, Mark Valley has proven he is more than just a pretty face. With a real life degree in Math and Engineering from West Point, Valley is both brains and brawn. Mark Valley could probably fact check the show, which would ruin everything. He"s also a veteran of the Gulf War.

Our Theory on John Scott

We would imaging the FBI does pretty good background checks, so we can assume that John Scott has some heavy government connections. Instead of working for a dark and evil cabal sworn to protect the work of "The Pattern," is it possible Scott is a member of yet another super security group investigating the phenomena for an entirely different purpose?
