Doghead

Some of our favorite comic book characters are ones whose names give you all the information you need, and that’s why we love Doghead. It’s certainly not because of his nonsensical origin that saw illegal Ecuadorian immigrant Chio Chulindo get hit by a bus at the same time as a dog, and then get combined and reanimated by Blackheart (best remembered as the giant guy who is totally cheap to play with in Marvel vs. Capcom 2). The guy’s named Doghead and actually has a dog head, and for that, we salute him.

Black Juju

Some people will try and tell you that Brother Voodoo is the most racist Marvel character, but they couldn’t be more wrong. In fact, old BV isn’t even the most racist black Marvel character, as evidenced by the existence of Black Juju. Typing the words makes us feel like Al Sharpton is gonna kick us in the nuts any minute, and the fact that the guy looks like Saba Simba sure has hell ain’t helping either.

Null the Living Darkness

Where did Null the Living Darkness come from? He was born from the despair of the winged S’raphh, who used to live on the human moon, but we’re still a little unclear on how a race of moon people getting really upset results in a gigantic, many-eyed, tentacled Lovecraftian horror. Anyone care to explain it to us?

Verminus Rex

Verminus Rex is a big, human-sized, super-powered rat who also happens to be a former Spirit of Vengeance, giving him powers much like Ghost Rider’s own. Yes, of course, that’s absolutely psychotic, but “Verminus Rex” is also just about the best supervillain name we’ve ever heard. Evil Splinter with a flaming head – what’s not to like?

The Orb

There have actually been two Orbs in Marvel continuity, with each one crazier than the last. The first was an old partner of Johnny Blaze’s mentor, Crash Simpson; he suffered a horrific motorcycle accident and as a result was given a magical eyeball helmet by Those Who Wield Power (don’t ask). More recently, the role has been inhabited by a far more self-consciously wacky villain for whom the giant eye actually appears to be his head.
