You guys remember Tony Atlas, right? Three-time Mr. USA winner, one of the first black WWF Tag Team Champions (along with Rocky Johnson), and all-around popular wrestling face known to fans as the "Black Superman."
But for some reason, WWE (then WWF) didn't want a black guy bedecked in American flags running a patriotic face gimmick in 1991. The solution was obvious: Turn Atlas into an Ugandan warrior named Saba Simba, who looked like an extra from a regional touring production of The Lion King.
