Best Movie Ever: Pulp Fiction

Amanda Plummer's Honey Bunny sure had fire and drive, but what exactly was it that led Tim Roth's Pumpkin to think she'd be a good partner during a robbery?

It's not a problem that reveals itself til the end of the film. For the purposes of this prologue, her unprintable shout to the diner patrons, held freeze-frame and slam into Dick Dale's "Misirlou" (resurrecting surf rock for a new generation) is the perfect way to begin this wonderful piece of pulp fiction.

To anyone who hadn't seen Tarantino's earlier movie Reservoir Dogs (or, for that matter, the films of Jim Jarmusch) the dialogue in Pulp Fiction was absolutely revelatory.

To witness tough guys bandy about pop culture minutiae and mundane topics like the European menu at Burger King shattered all expectations about how criminals should behave in movies.

That it also taught us about the metric system was an added balance.

It's around the time that the back of Marcellus Wallace's head is talking to Butch Coolidge that we realize that the soundtrack to Pulp Fiction is truly no joke. The scene plays out as Al Green's "Let's Stay Together" flows coolly beneath the dialogue.

As someone who was in college when Pulp Fiction broke, I can tell you that it was the universally accepted background music to every dorm room get together. Tarantino's ultimate mix-tape of surf rock, funk and 70's soul was one of the few things that absolutely everyone could agree upon.

Uma Thurman's jet black pageboy haircut is what made it to the poster of Pulp Fiction (even if, truth be told, she's not in the movie all that much.)

Her evening out with Vincent Vega offers a number of now iconic moments, particularly the strange dance incorporating swooping V for Victory signs across the eyes.

While Tarantino and Roger Avary's screenplay does a lot of twists and turns, the moment where the drawn square becomes a physical square on the screen is the only moment that breaks reality. But all the characters are high on drugs at this point, so maybe we're just seeing it from their point of view.
