While your mom (and airline ticket underwriter) may explain your trip to Comic-Con as “at least he’s getting out of the house,” little does she know that one of the biggest draws for convention-goers is sitting in a dark room and watching Comic-Con trailers.
Of course, a Comic-Con trailer is more than just a usual film clip. It is oftentimes a first look into a Universe you didn’t even know existed, but are now compelled to buy all the prequel Manga and exclusive 12 inch collectibles with seven points of articulation.
FIRST LOOK AT COMIC-CON TRAILERS
In the darkened exhibition halls of Comic-Con we can bear witness to a ten second teaser for fandom’s most anticipated feature film before it is even shot, like last year’s The Avengers. Or maybe we can be one of the first civilians to take a journey to Pandora, as when James Cameron debuted twenty minutes of footage for the thunderstruck Comic-Con audience.
You will meet this man. And you will not be happy.
Watch cable news enough and you’ll start to wonder if our electoral system still has any muscle, but know that it was the reaction to the surprise Comic-Con trailer of Tron Legacy that snuck its way into the Disney panel that helped get that movie greenlit.
Similarly, it may have been the groans and walkouts during the screening of the Bionic Woman reboot pilot (anyone remember that show?) that got the gears in motion for its early cancellation.
The admixture of unleashed pheromones (those booth babes do a number), fanboy anticipation, body odor and Jack Link’s Beef Nuggets makes the air in the convention center’s auditoriums crackle with truth. Reaction to a Comic-Con trailer is an acid test for appreciation among those who celebrate the popular arts.
DIG THE AWESOME VIDS AT THIS YEAR'S SDCC
This year’s Comic-Con ought to be as remarkable as any other. We’re bound to see first footage from The Amazing Spider-Man, The Hunger Games, The Avengers as well as additional goodies from Rise of the Planet of the Apes, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1, Immortals, Final Destination 5, Fright Night, Captain America: The First Avenger, Conan the Barbarian and. . . .who knows what else?
Comic-Con is also home to the “surprise” screening. In the past we’ve had first looks at the complete District 9, Ninja Assassin and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. This year the cat’s out of the bag that lucky Con-goers will be able to be among the first civilians to see Harrison Ford’s return to badassery in Jon Favreau’s Cowboys & Aliens.
Spider-Man, Spider-Man. Can he do whatever Tobey MaGuire can?
UGO remains dedicated to not only bringing you description and analysis of Comic-Con trailers as they break, but uploading the genuine article the moment studio-sanction video becomes available.
