Expeditedscreening through theU.S.
TransportationSecurityAdministration (TSA)
The TSAmanages andoperates , an expedited security
screeningprogram that allows certain travelers tomove
through securitymorequickly and easilywhendeparting from
participating airports in theU.S. The TSA, not United, randomly
selects travelers for expedited screening.
The ability touse lanes ismost consistent for travelers
whohave joined aDepartment ofHomeland Security Trusted
Traveler program. After completing abackground check and
screening, travelerswho are enrolled in a Trusted Traveler
program are issued aKnown TravelerNumber (KTN) or PASS ID.
Members of theU.S. ArmedForces, including those serving in
theU.S. Coast Guard, Reserves andNational Guard, canuse their
Department of Defense (DoD) identificationnumber. This number
shouldbenotedwhenmaking a flight reservation, or you can
add it to an existingUnited reservation through the “Edit traveler
information” option at united.com/managereservations.
If the TSAdetermines that a traveler is eligible for expedited
screening, information is embedded in thebarcodeof his or her
boardingpass. A logoor “TSAPRE” is alsoprintedon the
boardingpass near the traveler’s name. When the TSA agent at
aparticipating airport scans thebarcode, eligible travelerswill
bedirected to a lane. Note that not all airports offer
lanes. Children ages 12 andundermay accompany an eligible
traveler through .
As of April 2015, travelerswithout aKTN/PASS ID/DOD IDnumber,
including thosewhopreviouslyopted in through a frequent flyer
program, will notice a reduction in thenumber of times they
are chosenby the TSA for . Additionally, the TSAwill
always incorporate random andunpredictable securitymeasure
throughout the airport, and inorder to retain a certain element of
randomness, no individualwill be guaranteed expedited screening.
Visit tsa.gov/tsa-precheck to learnmore.
