HSM Video #1: Welcome Home
by IrishSiren, HSM filmmaker
When NorseGamer first approached me about creating a film about HomeStation Magazine, I pointed and laughed at him. He said I could have carte blanche to come up with whatever I wanted; I told him I wasn’t interested. I had pickories to collect. Benches to glitch. Poland to invade. Whatever.
Then he rather annoyingly gave me a challenge:
Create an ad for HSM.
How the hell do you advertise a magazine about Home?
Norse loves to challenge people. I’ve worked with him long enough to know that he has very little patience for excuses or slackers, and loves to push people to be their creative best — not for his benefit, but for their own. In my case, he knows that I don’t back down from things, and I get a kick out of doing the impossible. And in this case, the challenge intrigued me; HSM is a very literate publication that treats its audience like adults and tries to promote Home. Why it doesn’t get more formal acknowledgement from Sony is frankly beyond me. How, then, to promote HSM?
What we came up with was the idea of promoting what HomeStation is all about: namely, improving the Home experience and building the community.
There are people who wander around Home and think it’s somehow boring or dull — that there’s nothing to do. And the truth is that these people are slow and should be put on the short bus. Because Home is full of epic win, with a side order of awesomesauce. And this magazine has done quite a lot to help demonstrate this fact.
Further, HSM embodies something which I personally agree with: that it’s the people who make Home worth visiting. The developer experiences are amazing, yes, but it’s the community that makes Home what it is. It’s something worth building and nurturing.
More than anything, it’s my hope that this particular video project helps capture the “feel” of Home. The fact that it’s a party. A constantly changing, ever growing party.
Special thanks must be given to all of the people who made this video possible. As you’ll see from the group scenes, we maxed-out a server to shoot a very complicated series of setups, some of which required no text bubbles at all (which, when you’re dealing with sixty-plus people, is no easy trick to pull off). So many fantastic individuals and groups were involved — the Hamsters, the Homelings, HOMEinformer, the Grey Gamers, the Guns of the Helghast, the Heinis, Joanna Dark, Burbie52…the list goes on for some length. Every single performer turned in an outstanding performance. If you were in the video, find yourself and let us know!
So here it is, and while I’m more of a freelancer who was brought in solely to create this video, I must admit that I really admire what the HomeStation team is doing. Hopefully you find this entertaining and a good summation of all the things that make Home great.

Irish, wat can i say?!, it’s such a shame i had to drop the resolution of the video for my computer for it to be watchable (I think the commercial laws of Nature is telling me to upgrade my computer now)
I loved the music, I loved the pacing of the whole video.
I’ve now become yur biggest fan
Absolutely awesome. I posted it to my FaceBook page for all the slackers to see what they’re missing. I’m not what you’d call a socialite on Home, but this does remind me of why I keep going back. All the crazy people and places. Excellent job. I may just have to bust out the keyboard and/or headset and start mingling.
Awesome, awesome, awesome Irish! And contained 10% more Homelings than other leading brands.
I’m impressed…nicely done :>
I know it’s hard to be impartial on this (given my position within HomeStation), but seriously…this is an AMAZING video, Irish. You did a brilliant job.
