Trier

Trier was founded by Augustus in 16 B.C.  When Emperor Diocletian (from Split, Croatia) divided the Roman Empire into four sectors, he made Trier the capital of the west - roughly modern-day Germany, France, Spain, and England.  In the fourth century A.D., the city had 80,000 residents, a four-mile wall, four great gates, and 47 round towers.

The pedestrian center of town today is defined by the medieval wall, which encloses only half the area the Roman wall did.  Roman sights include the huge city gate (Porta Nigra), basilica, baths, and ampitheater.

Getting There

By Plane/Train: from Luxembourg Airport (~50km away), or Frankfurt am Main airport (~200km away).  From Frankfurt it is about a 3-hr train ride via Saarbrücken and Koblenz (change trains).  The medieval center of town is about a 10-minute walk from the train station.
