Himmerod
Abbey (Kloster Himmerod) is a Cistercian monastery in the
community of Großlittgen in the district of
Bernkastel-Wittlich, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, located
in the Eifel, in the valley of the Salm.
Getting There
We'll cycle from Trier to Himmerod (home of Kloster
Himmerod) mostly along established bike paths - along the
Mosel through Schweich and Hetzerath, then north to
Himmerod. (From Schweich get on the Wittlicher Senke
bike path, to Hetzerath - can continue on it towards Esch through Salmtal (on
Salm bike path?) to Dreis, where you're on the Wittlicher Senke again. Northeast of Dreis just look for turnoff bike path towards Bergweiler.)
The route at left is just about 50 km
/ 31 mi.
Sights
The big draw is Kloster Himmerod (photo above right),
founded in 1134 by St Bernard (really). The Baroque
church was completed in 1751, but fell into ruin after
French occupation in 1802. The monastery was
re-founded by the settlement of German Cisterian monks from
the former monastery of Mariastern in the present
Bosnia. Of course what drives us here - besides
history - is the fact that they have a cafe, guesthouse, and
according to Ron Pflipsen, some really fine beer brewed in a
Belgian style.
