Hermeskeil - Our Ruwer Valley Excursion
Hermeskeil is in the "heart of the Saar-Hunsrück" in the
"Hochwald", or high forest.
Getting There
We'll take the "Radlerbus" - which runs only on Saturdays,
Sundays, and Holidays starting 1 May (is daily 2 July - 10 August)
- from Ruwer to Hermeskeil, then cycle the 50km back to Ruwer
along the Ruwer-Hochwald
Cycle Track, a historical train route turned into a bike
path. The path follows the Ruwer river and runs through
vineyards, crossing over 20 bridges. "Nature and technology,
cultural and culinary specialities, wine and woods: There is a
multitude of new experiences the Ruwer-Hochwald Cycle Track has to
offer." From Ruwer we'll return on bike paths to our
hotel in Trier, another ~5km, for a total of ~60km (37 mi) for the
day (excluding detours :-).
Sights
While most of the sights are along the Ruwer-Hochwald Cycle
Track, there are a few items of note in Hermeskeil itself, including
a steam locomotive museum (open only the first weekend of each month
- we'll be in luck!) and an aircraft museum (out cycling loop trails
RR8 or RR9). Other sights along the cycle track include:
- Burg Grimburg - partially reconstructed castle 2km from
Grimburg, on a hill between Hermeskeil and Kell am See
- Easy route is road 147 from Hermeskeil ~ 7km
- Kell am See historical train station
- Burg Sommerau ruins
- Wine and history nature trail between Waldrach and Mertesdorf
- 5km path with panoramic views into the Ruwer valley and over
vineyards.
- Turn from the cycling path into the Kreisstraße 12 at
the Waldrach covered bridge. Follow Kreisstraße about
200m heading to Waldrach until you reach the roundabout, the
„Platz unserer schönen Weinkönigin“ is right next to
it.
- Karlsmühle in Mertesdorf - Germany's oldest mill and only
one with proven Roman tradition...now a hotel and restaurant
