You should stop mixing the mixture once it reaches a syrup-like consistency. You can add water to make the mixture thicker; you can also add a little more resurfacer if it seems too thin. Your helper will be able to fit weatherstripping inside the expansion joints in order to prevent the resurfacer leaking into them while you mix.
