Snorkeling is great around the St. Andrews State Park beach, and also on Shell Island. Habitats can range from sandy bottom to shallow grassy flats to the rock faces of the jetties. See tropical fishes, crabs, rays and, in some cases, even a sea turtle. Snorkel equipment can be rented from the Jetty Store. You can snorkel around the St. Andrews State Park Jetty and on Shell Island. The habitats vary from sandy bottom to shallow grass flats to the rocky faces in the jetties. You can expect to see tropical fish and crabs as well as rays and, if you're lucky, some resident bottlenose dolphins.
Shell Island is a nature preserve with no restrooms or any other visitor facilities such as trash receptacles, picnic tables, or shade pavilions. There is no trash removal service. Island visitors are asked to be responsible and take everything they bring to the Island with them when they leave.
Shell Island is technically only an island at high tide, and although the land is privately owned, the footpaths across it are open to the public.
Shell Island is on the west coast of Wales about 7 miles north of Barmouth. There is a road leading to there that you drive on, but at certain high tides the sea covers the road.
