Mike Post. Neal Hefti. Mack David. These men, and others like them, have been responsible for some of the most enduring musical compositions of all time. And yet, their names are virtually unknown outside a small circle of cognoscenti. These are the men who create the theme songs for television shows - those picture-perfect jewels of tunecraft that rattle through our heads, unbidden, prompted by Proustian memory-biscuits. Stop anybody on the street and we'd bet they can sing you at least a dozen TV themes, from The Golden Girls to Bonanza and everywhere in between. Truly they are a part of our national collective unconsciousness, like Paul Bunyan and the Jersey Devil. In this article, we run down the eleven most enduring - a titanic task, no doubt. But using complex algorithms and precise measuring devices, we are confident in saying that these truly are the Best TV Themes of All Time.

The Sopranos

The show that turned HBO from a network where B-grade movies go to die into a powerhouse purveyor of top-notch dramas had a lot going for it from the beginning, from the calculating mind of creator David Chase to a note-perfect cast comprised of both New York acting royalty and actual former criminals. But would the show would have sailed if it wasn't for the unforgettable opening theme, "Woke Up This Morning" by British band Alabama 3? Over a grungy background of distorted harmonica and electric guitar, singer Jake Black narrates the tale of a man with a gun and a heart full of revenge. It sure as hell beats the pants off "Don't Stop Believing," we'll say that much. Formed after singers Black and Rob Spragg had the uniquely British idea to meld country blues with acid house, Alabama 3 (or A3 as they're known in America) never really took off beyond this song, but what a one-hit to have.
