The Walking Dead Midseason Premiere's Best Moments

The search for Sophia is finally over, but now the survivors have to face a whole new mess of problems.

The Walking Dead is back, and the first episode deals heavily with the aftermath of Sophia's death. The group spent the first half of the season searching high and low for the little girl (especially Daryl), but it turns out the wee one was within arm's reach the entire time. Rick failed to protect her and Sophia joined team zombie.

Since getting a taste for brains and human flesh, Sophia was captured and is being held in the barn right on Hershel's property. Shane went crazy and rallied for them to slaughter the residents of the barn, but couldn't man up when tiny Sophia emerged. Rick took responsibility for this tragic loss and ended her suffering by putting a bullet through the child's head. But that ridiculous and amazing ending left us with many questions and wondering how certain relationships will go from there. Thankfully, this episode answers a good deal of them.

Lori Fails

In a world full of hungry zombies, a steering wheel is Lori's biggest threat. I get that traffic isn't really a concern when a vast majority of the population are dead, but come on, keep your eyes on the road. You have the entire open street at your disposal and a single walker causes you to flip your car. Way to go, Lori. That has to be the epic fail of the week.

Hershel's Not-So-Happy Hour

I can't blame Hershel for not wanting to kill the ones he loved. He was isolated from the sh*t storm taking place right around the corner and there's no shame for holding onto hope. But those walkers had to go, and Shane (despite his crazy antics) did the right thing. The last episode made us wonder how Hershel would react to seeing the zombified corpses of his family getting blasted apart. Would he have a moment of epiphany and finally notice the dark situation they're in, or would he go all emo and try to kick them off his farm? Well, this episode shows it's a bit of both. Hershel's pissed off right away, demanding for the group to leave his farm immediately. But that was just a knee-jerk reaction. Hershel finally realizes there's no hope for the undead (or the living) and turns back to his old best friend: alcohol. Hershel's medical skills are needed now more than ever, so he better finish off that drink, put on his big boy pants, and get back to the friggin' farm.

Sweet Revenge

Shane betrayed Otis in one of the best scenes so far in season two, but now it's looking like some sweet revenge could be around the corner. Dale spilled the beans to Lori, implying that her former booty call is the reason Otis is dead. Man, I had no idea Dale was such an astounding detective. He guessed what happened play-for-play. He says he suspects that Shane was left with no other option, shot Otis and left him as bait to make an escape. Bravo, Dale. But what's especially interesting here is how this will play out and if Shane will indeed turn on anyone else.

Fort Benning

The farm is nice and all, but ultimately, Fort Benning was what Rick had in his sights all along. He's getting cozy on Hershel's land, but that objective is still in the back of his head. However, Dave and Tony decide to kick Rick's dreams square in the junk. Fort Benning? More like Fort Fail because it got overrun, cowboy! Oh well, we hear there's always a prison nearby...

Fresh Out Of Sympathy

Quite the ironic situation we have here. Dave and Tony were sketchy dudes, but they were just trying to survive like everyone else. It wasn't too long ago that Rick was in the very same situation, and now he's fighting to remain on the farm. Despite being considered a boy scout to many, Rick proved he's not going to take any crap and he'll defend his group... even if it means killing other humans. Besides, it was technically self-defense since Dave reached for his pistol first. But damn, talk about impressive reflexes.
