The Walking Dead Midseason Premiere's Best Moments

The barn incident left Hershel's family devastated. They just witnessed their family members stumble right into the path of a firing squad. They stood no chance, and most of them were absolutely demolished by the onslaught of shotguns and pistols. One poor sap went over to mourn a body, but the walker still had some fight in her. She almost gets a bite of the girl but Andrea makes sure that doesn't happen by stabbing the animated corpse through the back of the skull.

After that finale, everyone was wondering how Sophia was in the barn all along and no one knew about it. Well, this episode provides the answer. It turns out that Otis was the man responsible for wrangling zombies and locking them up in the barn. Clearly, Otis stumbled upon zombie Sophia and tossed her into the barn with the others. Before he knew anyone was looking for the girl, he shot Carl and then rushed out with Shane to get medical supplies. But Otis had no idea the man he was trusting was actually one of the craziest bastards around. Shane shot Otis in the leg and let zombies tear the guy apart while he was able to escape and, in turn, save Carl's life. The secret of Sophia's location literally died with Otis. But on a more important note, I swear this show has something against children. First kill? A child. Sophia? Turned into a zombie and shot in the face? Carl? Shot in the gut. Run for it, kids!

Shane truly is the most complex character on the show, and it looks like he's losing it. First he sacrificed Otis, then he fired everyone up to slaughter the zombies in the barn, but now it seems as though these events are taking a major toll on him. He's losing it, and it showed when he blew up at Dale just for staring at him. We all know what Dale was thinking, but the old man never said a word, and Shane let loose, trying to prove he's not the dangerous one and what he did was the right thing. Personally, I agree that the zombies in the barn had to be put down, but Shane's method of "OMG ZOMBIES IN THE BARN! GET 'EM NOW!" probably wasn't the best tactic. Do you agree with Shane's approach? I imagine it's tough to hold onto your humanity in such a bleak and insane time. Almost everyone you know is dead (or undead) and you'll need to fight to survive every second of every day. And that callous nature is starting to become more and more transparent in a handful of survivors. The scene where Andrea retrieves an arm might seem pointless to some (or even just an attempt to add more gore), but I took it as a showcase of how they've become immune to such terrible things. Episodes earlier she would panic at the sight of a zombie, now she's casually riding in the back with a bunch of corpses and then picks up a severed arm like it's nothing out of the ordinary. Even Lori is afraid Carl is growing cold because he would have shot Sophia, too. Save them with your heart of gold, Rick!
