Star Wars: The Clone Wars: Darth Maul Facts

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, a Nightsister and a Zabrak man got together on the plant Iridonia, put on some Barry White and had a baby named Maul. A skewed sense of rituals meant the father had to be killed and little baby Maul then traveled to the planet of Dathomir. Here, Maul was part of the Nightbrothers, a group of Zabrak fighters who were servants to the Nightsisters. Just like his brothers, Feral and Savage Opress, Maul took part in a tradition that would give him a very distinct appearance. The Zabrak dipped into a bath and liquid covered his entire body in the tattoos we've all come to recognize. However, this is a retcon because older sources had the tattoos given to him by Sidious.

His mother, Kycina, yearned for one of her children to escape this society, so she tried to give the boy to Darth Sidious. The future Emperor agreed to take the child because he knew Maul had a lot of potential with the force, and so began the young boy's path to hatred.

Darth Maul is a man fueled by his hatred for the Jedi, and he has the Emperor is to thank for that delightfully narrow-minded agenda. The Dark Lord of the Sith took Maul in as his apprentice and molded the young man into the ultimate killing machine. Maul underwent fierce reprimands for showing any weakness and was tested with a number of missions. 

When he finally earned the Darth title, Sidious sent Maul across the galaxy which including assassinating a variety individuals and even bringing together two companies. As we all know, he was eventually sent to kill the Jedi interfering during the Invasion of Naboo, and the end result was a lightsaber through his torso.

The Emperor drilled pure hatred into Maul's mind over the years and the result is a dangerous and diabolical man. Maul is sheer evil and loathes the Jedi, however, he's a man that respects combat capabilities. If faced with a foe who can match his own extremely impressive level of skill, he would strive to give the challenger a swift death. When it comes to facing lesser opponents, however, Maul suffers from arrogance, and we all saw how well that served him in The Phantom Menace.

If you come face to face with Darth Maul, there's no shame in making a run for it. Sidious trained Maul to be a merciless weapon, and the Dark Lord succeeded. Skilled in multiple techniques with a lightsaber, Darth Maul is someone to fear and respect when it comes to lightsaber duelists. As The Phantom Menace revealed, Maul is so talented that he was able to hold off (for the most part) a Jedi master and a padawan at the same time. Throw in his agility, unarmed methods and the force, and we can all agree that Maul is truly a badass.
