Fake Fast Food Chains In Entertainment

Because of copyright and licensing issues, these fake fast food chains sprang into existence. But they have won a place in our hearts - and our stomachs.

For obvious reasons, filmmakers can't always use McDonalds or Kentucky Fried Chicken in their flicks, especially if bad things happen there. That's why they create imaginary burger joints, chicken shacks, pizza dens and other fast food franchises to set the action in. Here are some of our favorite, from the ridiculous to the sublime. Strap on your hairnet and get behind the fryer for The Best Fake Fast Food Chains:

Kevin Smith is a dude who knows his food, so it's no surprise that the View Askewniverse's leading fast food chain shows up in a number of his movies. Burger joint Mooby's shows up across a few of his movies, most notably in Clerks II where Dante and Randal have to take jobs there. Mascot Mooby the Golden Calf is a reference to a famous tale from the Bible where God strikes down at idolaters, which adds a little Old Testament flavor to the burgers.

The next frontier of fast food is, of course, the "casual dining" restaurant, where you pay more money to get meals that are just as bad. You know - Applebees, TGI Friday's, that sort of thing. This was brilliantly sent up in the classic Office Space with Chotchkie’s, where employees have to wear wacky pins and act like total asshats for the management. It's such a perfect parody that it still remains hilarious over a decade later.

Buffy Summers had to deal with a number of trials and tribulations growing up in Sunnydale, but none were as greasy as getting a job at the Doublemeat Palace. In this Season Six episode, Buffy needs to earn cash so she takes a gig at this new fast food chain, which boasts a signature sandwich that combines both beef and chicken. Of course, since this is Buffy it's also a cover for something darker, and when she finds a finger in the meat grinder it's not even a surprise.

One of the many cool things about Watchmen was the little tweaks it gave the world we know - because of the slightly altered path of history, familiar businesses like Burger King never got off the ground. Instead, one of the most popular forms of fast food in this universe is Indian cuisine, as interpreted by "Gunga Diner." I have to say, I'd much prefer being able to get a samosa at 3 a.m. than a burger and fries. Watchmen's other fictional restaurant, "Burgers & Borscht," doesn't sound quite as appealing.

Mr. Cluck's Chicken Shack

Unsurprisingly, Lost fans picked apart every aspect of Mr. Cluck's Chicken Shack for hidden clues and meanings. But sometimes a fried chicken restaurant is just a fried chicken restaurant, even if Hurley worked there - and then bought the place. After our lovable tubbo got fired by manager Randy Nations over a missing 8-piece dark meat meal, he won the lottery and used some of his winnings to take it over...until a mysterious meteorite leveled the place.
