Star Wars: The Phantom Menace's Worst Characters

Star Wars Episode One: The Phantom Menace only grows more horrid with age. We list the eleven worst of its many lame and wasted side-characters.

The original Star Wars trilogy was filled with tiny characters whose varied designs both drew you in and gave you salacious details about the saga's larger universe. The prequel trilogy, on the other hand, was filled with a bunch of bland CG monsters and slumming actors that no one could raise much enthusiasm over. With the release of Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace in 3D, we look back on the film's most unheralded worst characters.

Captain Tarpals

Other than Boss Nass and Jar Jar Binks, Captain Tarpals is the only Gungan with character enough to make a toy out of. His main distinguishing feature is some extra skin on his face that happens to slightly resemble facial hair. He's not very nice to Jar Jar, so he gets some points there. Other than that, though, this character is pretty much worthless.

Sio Bibble

Every political circle must have its gigantic coward. For Queen Amidala, that coward is Sio Bibble. No matter what's going on, this guy is either in a state of confused shock or begging Padme to surrender. Usually characters like this are the first to go, but being a character in a kid's film, Sio Bibble lives on, forever telling characters to give up the moment things get a little scary.

Yarael Poof

The Jedi Council is where a million cool ideas were born only to die of boredom. Seeing all these crazy Jedi only teased us for the upcoming scene where we'd see this weird crew kick some ass.

For instance, just what kind of fighter was this Yarael Poof, the guy with a neck so long that it looks like a mocking invitation for beheading? That's a bold look for battle, second only to having "Poof" as a last name. Sadly, we'd never know. Poof never got a chance to doing anything more than sit around and nod with Yaddle. After seeing Yoda flip around like a hyper baby, however, maybe we got off lucky.

Ric Olie

Sharp-eyed viewers will recognize Ralph Brown as Del Preston from Wayne's World 2. They may even recognize him from his amazing work in Withnail & I. Non sharp-eyed viewers may not notice him at all in The Phantom Menace, as his character, pilot Ric Olie, does nothing except marvel at how good R2-D2 is at fixing his ship. He sits through the film just like every other human bit player in The Phantom Menace: awkward and confused and waiting for someone to tell them the whole thing has been an elaborate practical joke.

Mas Amedda

You see a lot of Mas Amedda in The Phantom Menace's political scenes, as he seems to be a perpetual vice president of the senate. He's the guy with two horns coming out of his head and two more coming out of his extra big and floppy ears. He's evil. You can tell not only because of his horn situation, but because he's always standing behind Palpatine looking bureaucratic. He was an extremely popular character with children who do not exist.
