Fantastic Fest

Our Movies editor, Jordan Hoffman, is down in Austin, Texas this week, reporting live from Fantastic Fest!

Fantastic Fest 2010: 14 Blades Review

Longer than the Han Dynasty itself, Daniel Lee's 14 Blades is one of those big fat martial arts epics you either eat up with a fork and spoon or pass and say "no thank you."

The fight sequences are pretty fantastic, as can be expected from anything with Donnie Yen or Sammo Hung's names in the credits.  Story-wise? Good luck.  I couldn't follow half of it, and I swear I'm not a moron.

There's a section in the middle, where it is just about a man and his spunky female hostage out in the wild, and not about court in-fighting or secret honor guards dealing with betrayal, when it becomes an actual movie.  The rest, however, is garbage, but gorgeous with big, bold action wonderfully shot and dazzlingly choreographed.

I give this movie a B.  Below are my thoughts directly after seeing the film

Fantastic Fest 2010: Fatso Review

No, it's not a remake of the Dom DeLuise film.  It is the story of an extremely sexually frustrated Norwegian slob whose life is turned upside-down by a flirty bird roommate.

Rino lives alone and masturbates and eats junk food.  He has one friend, a spazzed-out, frizzy-headed Steve Buscemi-type with real anger management issues.  Then a ridiculously hot Swedish girl moves in and. . . ugh. . . .it just gets painful.

Rife with sexual frustration, as well as genuine feelings, Fatso takes a hard look at the cruel hand fate deals to some of us.

Rino is an amateur comic book illustrator, and there are many hilarious, and very "adult," animated sequences.  (Singing fleshlights?  That's just child's play.)  Rino envisions himself as a clumsy, horny Rhinoceros who sometimes mutates with lustful rage into "Captain Cock."  it is definitely played for laughs, but there is a brutal honesty to it that you'll never see in an American film.  This is not an Apatow production, nor is it the work of Jared Hess, though you might be forgiven for thinking that if you just checked out some production stills.

The movie doesn't reinvent the wheel, but it wins major points for being true to its characters.  No one is a true villain or a saint.  Fatso also hints that being "blessed with looks" can be difficult for women, too.  (But, thankfully, it doesn't dwell on this.)  I give this movie a solid B+.

Fatso really connected with larger-than-life comics creator and UGO Editor-in-Chief Chris Radtke.  Here are his thoughts moments after the film.

Fantastic Fest 2010: Stone Review

You can see six movies in one day at Fantastic Fest (and I plan to start doing that soon) but day two had me engaging in some non-movie-watching Fest activities.  As such, I missed the Gala screening of Stone.  Luckily Chris Radtke caught it.

My first question was "how's Milla?" and he responded "crazy and great."  I've long thought that she has the potential to become a not-just-Resident Evil/Leeloo actress.

I started explaining my understanding of the movie based on watching the trailer, and I was told, "oh, it is much more nuanced than that!"

Below are the rest of his thoughts.
