20 | Singin' In The Rape |
And just in case anyone wasn't feeling queasy about A Clockwork Orange's stylized portrayal of sociopathic behavior, here comes the notorious home invasion sequence.
According to Malcolm McDowell, the idea to hum "Singin' In The Rain" while torturing the elderly writer and his wife happened spontaneously on set. Years later, McDowell met Gene Kelly and the legendary Hollywood hoofer refused to shake his hand.
19 | Not Quite Nostradamus |
Kubrick's previous film, 2001: A Space Odyssey, is remarkable in how much it got right about future technology. No such luck with Clockwork. More than 8-tracks, betamax or HD-DVDs, the microcassette was a format that even your loser uncle who always got everything wrong never bought into.
Here we see Alex's favorite poison, the tempestuous tunes of the Tuetonic titan Ludwig van Beethoven, thus making this dreadful screen character even more conflictingly sympathetic to audiences.
18 | William Tell Me Again (and Again) |
In an effort to show that Alex isn't just about rape, we see him pick up two adoreable "birds" at a record shop and initiate an unending fast-motion menage-a-trois to the tune of the William Tell Overture that is forever branded upon my brain.
