Okay, so like, youre a parent, right? Student Data Protection: Understanding FERPA . And you wanna keep your kid safe. Duh! But these days, its not just about stranger danger at the park anymore. Its like, digital stranger danger. We gotta talk about securing your childs privacy online. Its, um, kinda important, I guess.
First off, (and this is a biggie) talk. Just, actually talk to your kids. I know, I know, easier said than done, especially if theyre teenagers and think you know nothing. But, explain to them why sharing too much info online is a bad idea. Like, what kind of information is even considered too much??! Think full name, address, school, hobbies, you know, anything that could help someone find them, or like, pretend to be their friend.
Then, get all up in their settings. I mean, not literally all up in there, but you know, on their social media accounts. Make sure their profiles are private. Only friends can see their stuff, not the whole internet.
Passwords! Oh my gosh, passwords. Dont let them use "password123" or their birthday. Seriously. Help them create strong passwords, and maybe, just maybe, use a password manager.
Another thing is, like, location services. Turn them off! Or at least, limit them. Does your kid really need their location tracked 24/7? Probably not. And think about those apps that ask for permission to access all sorts of stuff. Do they really need access to your camera roll to, like, play a game? I think not!!
Finally, and this is a tough one, monitor their online activity. Not in a creepy, stalker way, but just keep an eye on things. See what theyre posting, who theyre talking to.
