Okay, so youre probably hear'n about FERPA, right?
Basically, FERPA-thats the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, for all you keeping score at home-makes sure your childs school records are kept, well, private. Were talking grades, attendance, even things like disciplinary actions.
The school needs your permission (usually in writing) to share that info with most third parties. Unless, of course, theres an exception! (Theres always an exception, isnt there?) Like, if the school is transferring your child to another school, or if theres a court order. Emergency situations where safety is concerned are also usually okay.
Now, a BIG thing to remember is that FERPA rights transfer to the student when they turn 18 or start attending a postsecondary institution (like college), regardless of age. check So, suddenly, you might not be able to get all the info you used to. Fun, huh? Its something to keep in mind, especially for college students.
It's important, to read the FERPA policy at your kids school! Because, sometimes, schools can disclose what they call "directory information" (like names, addresses, maybe even photos) without your consent, but they have to give you the option to opt-out of that.
FERPA can be a little confusing, but its all about protecting your childs privacy. And thats pretty darn important, if you ask me!
