way that I move through the day. I move
more slowly — the heat helps — and I
enjoy outdoor activities more than I
ever did because the sunny weather
begs for me to head out.

The Beach Bar in Cape Panwa
With its tasty Thai food, amazing views
and helpful staff, The Beach Bar is our
go-to place for an afternoon of fun, food
and friends. The grown-ups can sit in
the shade while the kids play in the
sand and surf. It’s perfect.

Old Phuket Town
Phuket Town reminds me a little of
my hometown in California with its
art, walking street, good eats and
interesting company. The atmosphere
is edgy and it’s the only place on the
island where I feel Thai culture really
shows itself.

NakaWeekendMarket
If I need some new sunglasses,
clothing, jewelry or street food, I go
there and get it on the cheap. Visit
when it opens at 4pm for the best
deals.

The Big Chicken Restaurant
(Krua Tungtong)
This restaurant in Kathu is my
favorite place to eat on the whole
island. Its inexpensive Isaan dishes
are so delicious that we go there
once a week for their perfectly
balanced
som tum
(papaya salad) and
barbecued chicken.

Coral Island
It’s just off the east coast of Phuket
and a 20-minute long-tail boat ride
away. It’s a great way for “locals” like
us to pretend we’re on holiday.
