legend, Burano’s buildings
werepainted sobrightly so
that fishermen could
recognise their homeswhen theywereout at
sea. Now, if youwant todecorate your house,
youhave to apply to the local government for
a list of permitted colours. Themost famous
is theCasaBepi Suà– the former homeof
local sweet seller andprojectionistGiuseppe
Toselli, whosemulticoloureddesignhas been
preserved sincehis death in2002.
But Burano is also known for its lace–
lacemakingdevelopedon the island in the
16thcentury; head to thecentral Piazza
Galuppi and its lacemuseum,Museodel
Merletto, to admire local work. The square is
alsohome to the SanMartinBishop’sChurch,
with its leaningbell tower andBaroquework
by 18th-century artistGianbattista Tiepolo.
Youcanbuy glassware fromMurano at nearby
stalls, while there areplenty of trattoria
on the island toenjoy seafooddishes, and
indulge in the local Bussolà andEssebiscuits.
