Homics, Issue #1

Aloha, and welcome to HomeStation’s very first graphic novel!

When HSM shifted its magazine issues to a quarterly instead of monthly schedule — in order to allow for sufficient time to put together really big cover stories like what we’ve had in our last few issues — we realized it wouldn’t necessarily be a bad idea to offer some lighter fare as interim material.

HomeStation is a remarkable brand; we are Home’s literary journal nonpareil, with forays into machinima, podcasting, artwork, poetry and beyond. But you can never rest on your laurels; if you stagnate, you die. So you have to keep stretching and exploring new territory.

It is thus that we bring to you what may very well be Home’s very first graphic novel, courtesy of Sorrow-83 and Keara22HI. These are not comics — as they are set in Home, we decided to call them “homics.”

From Keara: “This graphic novel asks, “How does one learn to love with their heart instead of their eyes?”

“The story is set in the Gothic Manor personal estate, which, for this story, has been transformed into a Museum of Antiquities in Paris.

“The curator of the museum is assisted by his son.  The son is far more interested in fantasizing about the statuary and other artifacts than in sweeping the floors and dusting the shelves.  And then, one fateful night, he sees an apparition — a ghostly figure wearing a mask.  Why is she wearing the mask?  Is she horribly disfigured? Hideously ugly? Or some creature never seen in real life before?”

We hope you enjoy HSM’s very first graphic novel!

I really hope that everyone who looks at this graphic novel will leave us some feedback. I would like to do more of these if people are interested.

  2. SealWyf_ says:

Stunning work. I think you have found your métier, Keara.

  3. Olivia_Allin says:

Okay, hear me out. You ask for feedback, so I will do my best. I find myself with a strong feeling of frustration after reading this. Frustration in a form I’m not accustomed to. And I understand the intent of this was not to frustrate. So let me explain…

While “frustration” may sound like a negative review, it is far from a negative review. My frustration stems from my lack of ability to artfully describe how much I enjoyed this! Just To say awesome job Granny would almost seem condescending and only be a fraction of what I’m trying to express. As for Sorrow’s artwork… Calling it world-class makes it sound like I’m trying to make a play on words. I have an elementary understanding of what it takes to make such images. Where I am a technician, Sorrow is indeed an artist and of the highest caliber! Combining the efforts and talents of everyone involved is not only the recipe for pure art but should be included in the definition of genius!

Sorry, this is the best I can do as far as feedback. Now I must go get something to drink because my mouth is dried out from having my jaw sitting on the floor.I hope this is the first of many! And if for some reason you sit down and write a list out of fans, please make sure that Olivia is near the top.

  4. Fabulous work everyone and it is only the first issue. WOW !!

All I can say is “WOW”! It is amazing how creative we can get with modern technology in today’s times. With all our ideas and stories in our heads, we can now … make them come alive! Look what we can do now through Home with our computers. Amazing. The sky is the limit. Thanks again Sorrow, Bill, Granny and Burbie! Very nice!

  6. Gideon says:

Wow! Wonderful work to all involved! I really think Home is much more suited to this format of story telling than machinima (at this point anyway). Very professionally produced. I hope there are many more in the future.

One thing though, in many of the background shots there is a “PlayStation Home” logo in the bottom right corner. Pull back the shot just a tad and crop that out in future volumes. I personally found it very distracting when reading.

Keep up the excellent work everyone! Can’t wait to see more.

  7. MsLiZa says:

By Jove…that was SO well done! Very impressed! I loved the art work, especially the final image. What a beautiful dénouement.

I agree with Gideon about trying to crop out the PSHome logo for future editions.

    *** SPOILER ALERT ***

Raphael made the right decision. I’d stay at the lovely fairy’s Aurora Apartment instead of returning to that gloomy manor with the crotchety old fart any day.

  8. Doobysnax says:

Bravo for thinking outside the box. The pages were thought out very well, love the use of color mixed with the darker manor, and the use of the poses and actions. Is this going to be a serial or setup as a one off? Would like to see more charector developement. But a very well done 1st issue

  9. keara22hi says:

Thank you all for this encouragement! The second one is well underway -- we hope to have it ready this Fall. And today we cast the one we will soon start shooting for the Winter quarter.

  10. SORROW-83 says:

    Ahem!^^
    firstable:
thanks for the feedbacks and encouragements
    (olivia,gideon,Liza and all the others^^).
I allways wander if i erase “plsthome” logo or not, i choose to be lazy on this Homics!^^

    secondary:
make a homics is a real challenge, not only technics, but (and it’s in my POV the more important)Human!
i can seem rude for all participants or witness of my work session, but it’s just a level of exigeance
    pushed to the maniacery (?)
    Keara give me her confiant when she ask me to help her to built a “graphic novel”, since the living of HOME of VengeanceFR & K-rolyne72, i was searching a sort of “team”;
so, i jump in with Keara, bubu & bill for “mysts of love” (all similitudes with my own experience on home isnt fortuite!^^)
I hope to find same collaboration for all my projects even i m visceraly independant!

    thanks you all.

    COMING NEXT:
“the call of the shadows” horror/fantastic
    “EX NIHILO” reflexion/introspection with bill!
“*********” project TOP SECRET from Keara!^^

Indeed, my comment to Keara was not meant in any way to slight Sorrow’s amazing graphic work. I’ve been a graphic novel fan for many, many years, and this piece blew me away. This is work on a professional level.

As for removing the PlayStation Home logo, I assumed it was an artistic decision, a way to remind us that these elaborate layouts, amazing as they are, were built from screen shots created with the Home still image camera, the same one we all own and use. The implication is obvious — we could do this too, if we had the time and some image-manipulation software. But the sheer magic that Sorrow brings to these images is all her own.

Thank you, both of you (and your able cast of actor/models) for a moving, inspiring read.

  12. anamri says:

I am not surprised at how well this turned out, after seeing Sorrow’s work in the postcard contest! And we all know the high standards Keara adheres to from her work here at HSM!

Absolutely beautifully done Sorrow and Keara! I was so entranced with the artwork and personality that shone through the Home avatars… I didn’t even notice the Home logo! lol

The talent and amount of time that went into this is apparent. I enjoyed every single panel and pixel!

I am definitely ooking forward to the next one!

  13. Scoop1942 says:

I really enjoyed this read… I have been considering trying something creative with HOME given all the hoopla over productions and stage sets right now… you have truly inspired me in a genuine way here… I’ve got my story, now I need to figure out how to produce it… plus, I have few friends so getting actors will be a challenge…

I actually had to read through this three times. The first time through, I kept forgetting to read it because I was more taken technically and visually… LOL… VERY WELL DONE on SO many levels guys! Brilliant! Bravo!

  14. keara22hi says:

Actually, many of the actors in our productions are from PSTalent.com. I highly recommend you contact them with a casting call. And, the incredible visual impact that Sorrow achieves: she uses GIMP (and has a creative IQ that’s off the end of the scale, of course)so it is highly recommended also.
If you need any help scouting locations, I own every personal space that would work as a set, so if you want a tour, just send an Add request to DarthGranny.

  15. Godzprototype says:

    ;)So…talented!

  16. Chelsie says:

All I can say is Wow!….What a labour of love this Graphic Novel is! as well as time intensive…And it was a wonderful Story that was told….Thank you to all who made it…I really enjoyed it very much…
