After reading the cover story in Issue 5 of HSM (the interview with John C. Ardussi, Senior Technical Project Manager, Sony Computer Entertainment America,
Product Development Service Group - VASG) - which was an incredible eye-opener about what goes into creating a new item or space for Home, I looked at the latest new offerings in the store with a fresh perspective.
And it makes me wonder, who in the heck at SCEA or VASG thought that a lighted swan lamp for $1.99 was a great idea? Something that took months of work by designers, artists, programmers, etc. to produce an item that probably sunk into the waters of oblivion without leaving even a ripple.
That's when I decided, a Suggestions section to the Forum isn't enough. Home needs some real market research. They need a Home Advisory Group comprised of volunteers from an entire cross-section of Home users. And they need some solid demographic data about who buys what and why. The polls in the Forum are a first step but all they answer basically is one question: did you like it or not? Developers need to know what did you like about a product? Why did you like it? What should be changed? How? What is a fair price if the cost of producing it is $____ and they have to sell ____ number of these to at least break even?
It is a challenge, but it can be done. IF. The big IF is, IF there are enough people in Home who would be willing to participate in such a group. No point in suggesting it if no one wants to be part of it.
Let's have your thoughts on this.
