Riders in a Storm

by Phoenix, HSM team writer

For budding machinimists, Home cannot be easily replaced. And when it eventually leaves us, and we are Homeless, such a loss — the loss of this wonderful canvas, with all its excellent tools for creativity — will hurt.

I’ll miss the spaces and item content available to me through Home. I’ll miss walking into a new space and having an idea for a story or a machinima piece, just from seeing the visual stimulus and detail in most of the spaces I own and use.

Home is like a back lot at a major film studio for me, and I love every bit of it. You can create sets for every period in time and every genre of film possible — just from the spaces found in Home. Home is a filmmaker’s dream playground. Everything — from costumes and props to spaces, sets and backdrops, furniture, cars, motorcycles, skateboards, surfboards, cameras, lighting, and a whole host of available actors — for whatever parts you can create.  Thanks to the many developers in Home, there is no end to the ideas and creations possible.

Sure, the vast majority of us may never “go pro” as a direct result of Home machinima. Only a couple of people in the history of the Home community ever pulled off that particular trick. But Home is where they — and we — cut our teeth. Home provided an unprecedented level of creative output for some of us: the ability to live inside a number of worlds, and from there, tell stories for others to hopefully enjoy.

This particular machinima piece is, like virtually all of my work, on the interpretive art-house end of the spectrum. Maybe you’ll think it’s good. Maybe not. The point is that Home gave me the tools to experiment. And those tools are available to you, too.

Create something. Doesn’t matter if it’s good or not. But create. To borrow from Thoreau, don’t go to the grave with the song still in you. Home may not be here tomorrow. But it is here today. Take advantage of your day in the sun.
