Decorating the Challenge Spaces – The Imperial Voyager
by Kassadee Marie, HSM team writer
Steampunk.
For most of us, that word brings images to our minds of an alternative world where the Victorian age lingers on, with innovations that were never created in the real world. You may picture scenes from Great Britain or the American West filled with steam engine trains puffing away through the terrain and steam ships full of people, traveling between these countries, as either of these places during this era are closely associated with this genre. This innovative style incorporates elements from science fiction, fantasy and occasionally, even horror. People in the last half of the 1800’s were very conservative in language and behavior; proper etiquette and manners were of the utmost importance. But it’s worth noting that although the clothing of this era was highly conservative also, Steampunk clothing often isn’t.
The public space, “Cogs Sky Platform” was about as close as we could get to this genre on Home, until the third challenge season from Sony allowed us to win our own steampunk space. The ultimate reward for that challenge season was the Imperial Voyager, or HTS Aeronautilus, a fantastic and fantastical space. This is one of the most charming and detailed of the challenge reward estates. The main deck houses the huge steam engine, complete with water tanks and details such as wooden rocker arms and filigree iron work. There are two open-air side platforms here, that are reached by ramps, with views of the colorful clouds surrounding this airship. There is also a two story interior, reached by stairs with more ornate iron work. The first floor has four large windows with a view of the platforms and the deck below. This room is partially furnished with a carpet, drapes, and chandelier. The second story has many furniture items such as tables, bookshelves with books, chandeliers, a rug, and a raised area with a tiled floor. It also has the command center with gauges and panels of knobs, switches, and levers, and the ship’s huge steering wheel on its own platform where it is always in motion.
There have been very few items or furniture from this genre for sale on Home previously, but one was the very interesting, “Steampunk Time Travel Machine”, that you should check out for this space. Sony also offers a wooden orrery and robotic feline in the Originals furniture store that would look great here, but as all three of these items are 22 furniture slots, you will probably only want to choose one or possibly two of them. Sony’s Paris astrolabe would fit in well here, too. VEEMEE has a fun steampunk clock in their 3D printer for 200 tokens that steams and keeps real time. It’s a great purchase, especially since it fits the theme so well and this space does not have wall hanging slots for a clock.
More recently quite a bit of furniture and clothing has been offered for sale in this unique style. The creative and wonderfully talented people at Juggernaut offered their six-piece furniture and companion pack called the “Steampunk Adventure Pack”. The companion is a robotic spider named Victor, which as you may know, is Dr. Frankenstein’s first name. The novel about this character (Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel “Frankenstein: or, The Modern Prometheus”) was very popular in the Victorian age.) This pack has two wall items, one of which is a clock; a functioning lamp with a blueish light and electrical currents; a large wing-back chair; and an active table with a moving top. It is for sale with and without male and female steampunk clothing included. These items are well-designed and include a hairdo for the ladies and a top hat for the gentlemen.
The equally talented people at Lockwood very recently have offered their own six-piece “Delirious Squid Steampunk Furniture Pack”. This pack includes a floating couch, complete with zeppelin; a desk with “aether computer”; a copper bookcase with various items on the shelves, suitable for a steampunk look; an oak barber chair that looks great with the desk; an oak furnace that steams; and a mine stove, complete with burning fire. All this is offered at a great price, too. This pack compliments Juggernaut’s pack very well and the only repeated item in both packs is a chair, which are in two very different styles.
All of these listed items blend in very well with the space and with each other.
In addition to the steampunk clothing offered with the Juggernaut pack, Lockwood has several outfits as well, which are offered separately by the piece and in bundles. Sony has various items in their Originals costume store, such as corsets, hats, goggles, and jackets. Codeglue has a unique steampunk pogo stick locomotion that you may find to be fun. nDreams has steampunk clothing bundles for both females and males that you might like, too. Also, they have steampunk horse locomotions, one of which can be won as a reward in the Trap-O-Matic at the Aurora public space.
Careful reviewing of any Victorian furniture on Home will lead you to other items you may want to purchase, especially if you are interested in the “horror” elements of the steampunk style. When furnishing the interior spaces, if you want a bedroom, a bed is one of the items you will need to find elsewhere. The ornate Gothic bed from Konami is one that looks great here and you’ll want to take a look at it. If you love the steampunk style, with a little work and a few purchases, this personal estate can be your “Est domus in qua cor” – the house in which your heart resides.
