Combat Rising 2: Epsilon Trailer (or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Inception Horn)

by Jin Lovelace, HSM team writer & filmmaker

You know how the “Inception horn” sound effect is showing up in every movie trailer out there today? It doesn’t matter if the film involves soft-lit dinner scenes, Sandra Bullock, and some nonsensical John Tesh soundtrack; the Inception horn will somehow be in the trailer.

This machinima piece stems from an idea I’ve been toying with regarding the over-usage of the Inception horn. Worse than incongruous, it’s becoming conspicuous in its ubiquity. It’s aural shorthand for THIS IS DRAMATIC, and frankly we need to move beyond it. But in order to do so, it must first completely saturate itself. A good idea turns into a mainstream concept, before inevitably degenerating into parody and bathos.

So, what the heck. Let’s use the Inception horn. Often. And inappropriately. Since I’m working on an upcoming futuristic catalog — Combat Rising 2: Epsilon — it seemed like a…well, bathetically good fit.

I know that Combat Rising 2: Epsilon may be a corny name, and so be it; I just wanted to feature apparel and mechs created by Home developers while showing off some of my own combinations thereof. And yeah, I’ve put a story with the project; something along the lines of a dystopian setting where society is in shambles and the government is nearing completion of a project that will gain total political control. The usual tropes that would call for an Inception horn.

Many thanks to RadiumEyes for participating in this trailer clip and for the costumes. The Wraith suit by Lockwood is officially on my “must own” list.
