Atom Republic’s Stack Genius

by Jin Lovelace, HSM team writer & filmmaker

Been a while since Home’s seen a new game, isn’t it?

When you think about it, there are a few personal spaces that are essentially games themselves. Aside from nDreams’ Blueprint:Home, where you can create your very own virtual abode, nothing really stood out as intriguing to me unless you wish to count Lockwood’s Venue space.

However, Atom Republic awed me with an interesting take on getting around your own personalized estate through puzzles and building blocks, entitled “Stack Genius”.

From the looks of it, the space seems to draw some inspiration from such games like Tetris and Intelligence Qube, so to see something like this pushed just so far up the creative ladder is more than interesting enough.

For this to be one of the most innovative spaces to come out in Home is a bit early to say for me, but I’m actually pumped. Though I’m not one to run to Sudoku to train my brain a bit (believe it or not, I go to three games: Suikoden II, DmC: Devil May Cry and Harry Potter games in PlayStation Home are my brain teasers for me) but I see myself owning this estate just to plunk my mind into Stack Genius and hope that I will get past the puzzles before I chuck my controller somewhere out of frustration.

There’s been some internal discussion amongst team members that Stack Genius almost seems like a form of “legalized” glitching. It’s certainly easy enough to get that sense from the video. Granted, the aesthetics don’t seem to be much to write home about yet, but that’s not the point; the point is that you have a personal space as an obstacle course. Lord only knows how much work must’ve gone into the QA cycle for this!

However you view this space, look for Stack Genius to come out soon in PlayStation Home.

  1. Thanks for the article! Yes the QA cycle was quite long: we had 4 passes of bug fixing. But it’s now all bug free at last, all yours to enjoy!
