Angel — A Dream

This is an art-house machinima using Home as a backdrop for a classic Jimi Hendrix tune, “Angel.”

Angels are entrenched into the human psyche; in our culture, many believe in the existence of angels as a result of their Judeo-Christian beliefs. Most see angels as benevolent winged creatures with loving and spiritual natures. There many songs sung about angels, most of which we know and sing during the Christmas season. This is a song about an angel sung by the late, great Jimi Hendrix, and one of my favorites.

“Angel” was written and self-produced in 1970 for his at the time unreleased studio album, just months before his untimely death in England.  Later the song would be included on his first posthumous album, entitled The Cry of Love, released in the UK in 1971 as the lead song.

“Angel” has a long history in the Hendrix anthology, as it was first written as the music to a song called “Little Wing”. Though the song has been interpreted as having several meanings, it began its formation after a dream he had in which his mother was going away from him. Some time after the dream, his mother died. Hendrix never forgot the strange dream, and the song’s beginnings were written from that dream.

Hendrix began writing “Angel”  in 1967 as Little Wing’s music; by 1968 it had transformed into “My Sweet Angel”, with lyrics being written for it. The song was given the full title of “My Sweet Angel Catherina”, another nod to the beginning as “Little Wing”.  By 1970, more work was done on the song, and its final form was created just four months before his death in September 1970.

Whatever your belief in angels, if you have been in Home you have seen many variations of angel outfits there. With that in mind, here is my interpretation of a dream by Jimi Hendrix: “Angel.”
