My Date With Destiny at the SHAREfactory

by Susan, HSM team writer

I’ve been saying for the past few months how I’m only focusing on PlayStation Home until the users of the master control program decide to discontinue the interface which we avatars have been accustomed to accessing on a daily basis. I can’t seem to function properly when I have all of my hands in as many cookie jars that I can find; so I decided to focus on one topic, which was Home.

But sometime soon the evening of the last Home maintenance will show its ugly face — and then what? The main reason we have been replacing the PS3 consoles in our house is because of our usage of Home. I don’t own a PS4 because of the uncertainty of Home’s future, so why bother, we thought.

That all changed when Destiny called.

The game is now out in Beta; I watched the trailer when it was released, and it looked kinda neat.  The call came out somewhere over the interwebs that if anyone is  in the beta and would be interested in making a video using SHARE factory, “they” would love to see what we come up with. Well, I can get a beta code for the PS3, but what the hell is SHAREfactory and why do we need to use it, I asked.

After some research I find out it’s an app on the PS4. Now what? After reaching out to the people in the condo unit we live in, a neighbor was gracious enough to let us borrow his console for a few hours as long as we leveled him up some. No worries.sharefactory

I don’t know why, but I expected the console to be smaller and lighter in weight. Installing it was just a matter of switching out cables, and before I knew it I was logged into the network. I looked up Sid Shuman’s video on YouTube about SHAREfactory, and after some trial and experimentation, I was ready to go.

The day before, I played the beta on the PS3, and already had an idea of some of the video shots I wanted to capture. But what I didn’t have was a plan. I had no idea what kind of video to make.  I looked at the ones posted on the forums and knew that’s not what I wanted, so I decided to let things jut happen — and whatever we come up with, so be it.

Capturing the gameplay was super easy: just double-tap the Share button on the controller to start the recording process, and tap it once to stop and choose a destination for your video clips. Once you have all the clips captured, you merely go into the SHAREfactory app and begin importing your choices in video clips.  You can also import music and almost anything you want to add to your video by transferring the data to the PS4 via a USB stick. SHAREfactory does comes with some pre-installed applications, such as a variety of transitions and a library of music to select from.  The app was very easy to use, and it makes a great training tool for someone wanting to get into any type of videography field. I had a blast using it and look forward to any new additions they update it with.game

As for the game itself, I had fun playing it. It definitely was like Halo, DC Universe Online and Battlefield combined. I thought the graphics were spectacular, and the music was very powerful. I was reminded of several movies like Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, and Starship Troopers while playing the game. The AI was quite believable, as they sneak around and try and take you out. Eventually you unlock the Crucible level, and that is just like any other MMO – stay alive - but still very fun and had the replay factor off the charts.

There are several modes to choose to play from, and I never got bored playing this game. In the beta you max out at level eight, and you can do that in an afternoon. I am definitely going to get this game when it comes out, and you can find game walkthroughs and how-to’s on the PSN forums, as well as people broadcasting gameplay on their Twitch or Ustream channels.

If you own a PS4 — which I will next month — try out SHAREfactory. It’s an easy way to put together gameplay videos that you can upload and share with your family and friends. I could have spent more time with the video in editing, but we only had the console for a few hours. I looked at the interface of the PS4 while we had it, and I liked what I saw. Can’t wait till we get ours.
