The Ten Scariest Things in Home
by Kassadee Marie, HSM team writer
If you’re jaded about horror, or you find nothing in games or on Home frightening, you are probably never scared by anything in fantasy. Or you’ve just watched too many slasher films. Personally, I’ve been unnerved just by reading a book on occasion. (Here’s a suggestion for you: Google “two line horror stories” some time and read some of these truly disquieting vignettes.) In my four and half years on Home, I’ve been startled and momentarily frightened more than once. Maybe you have too.
Public Space: Siren Lounge by Sony. As if the darkness, shots, back ground screams, fog, and zombie motif aren’t scary enough, wait for the red fog to arrive one night and check out what happens next. I was trying to see how far the space extended there once, and I went to the far wall in the back of the location. Suddenly I had a zombie nurse coming right at me in first person view. I think I wet myself a little that time.
Estate: Cutteridge Estate by Juggernaut for $6.99. The theme here at this dark, spooky personal estate is scary and Juggernaut has even pumped up the action there several times at Halloween to make the space more interesting, and at times, startling. As time went on, we learned there is a whole tragic background story to this estate. That makes things you might see at various times, like the running scarecrow, the ghost girl, and the ball that bounces by itself, even more chilling.
Furniture: Demonic Cutteridge Furniture Bundle by Juggernaut for $6.99. This 14-piece furniture pack is from an alternate Cutteridge universe and these pieces are very much alive and/or haunted. They are animated in various ways and as a hair-raising touch the animations are random. You can walk right up to a piece of furniture or even sit on something like a couch or chair, without realizing it’s going to move in some way, at times directly and specifically toward you.
Outfit: Animated Heavy Spider and Snake Arm tattoos by Heavy Water for $2.99. (Please note this is a male-only outfit.) In real life, I find snakes and spiders to be two of the scariest animated (and non-human) things ever. I really don’t care for any of the creatures from the arachnid or reptile families. The idea of having them touch me or move on my body is beyond alarming. Frankly, I don’t want them moving on anyone’s virtual body who’s standing near mine, either.
Costume: Ghostface outfit from Scream by Codeglue for $2.99. Another male-only outfit, this item appears to have been pulled from the store at some point. I have no idea why this would be, as I’m sure it was a best seller. However, it may still be obtainable through the inspect feature. Not only is this a frightening costume to look at, it includes a “creep” walk and “run with knife” animations, as well as two R1 emotes, both being knife stabbing animations, as is fitting for the theme.
Companion: Mysterious Doll by Sony for $2.49. It’s creepy enough when this Chucky-like doll follows your avatar while you’re not looking directly at it and then sits and looks somewhat innocent when you turn toward it – but it’s very shocking the first time he’s suddenly “in your face” and seemingly all over your television screen. I know when I saw it happen the first time at a friend’s estate, my thumping heart jumped into my throat. Thanks, John.
Dance: Thriller-like dance from Atom Republic in the 80’s Dance Pack for $3.99. This dance remind me of the Michael Jackson’s Thriller zombie video, which is a very harrowing video, especially at the end. There are a lot of Michael Jackson items available from other dances or other versions of this one to moonwalks to a single glove.
Other Locomotion: Zombie walk from Atom Republic for $2.99. In addition to sound, actions can add a lot to the “look” or feel of something, in Home or the real world. Home zombie costumes are made even scarier and creepier when used with this item. Drag your feet and lumber around Home with this locomotion. You’ll even see a cloud of flies all around your head. Try pressing and holding the square button for something interesting.
Game: Ward of Despair by Sony. For some more shivery thrills, don’t miss this game while you’re there, located inside the building just off the Siren Lounge. There are several different scenarios offered at random, when you start playing the game, so you’ll need to learn the safe patterns to pick up the necessary items and to make it to the exit. Or go with a knowledgeable friend or two who have experience there. The rewards aren’t bad at all, either.
Musical Item: Box Beats: Horror sounds from nDreams for $2.99. Sounds add tension and realism in movies, TV shows, plays, and in Home. The sounds from this item include screams, demon laughter, ghostly voices, howls, and more. There are 11 sounds you can play at random or choose one sound to repeat. It’s a great addition to a Halloween space, and by the way – it even looks and moves in a scary way.
As always, these are just my opinions. You probably have a mental list of the items that you think are scariest too and may agree or disagree with mine. “Scary” may not even be something you’re interested in, guys. But keep in mind, the girls of Home may need a little comforting after being scared. I don’t recommend sending anything frightening to them from the gift machines, however.
