The LOOTcast: 2013 Retrospective

by NorseGamer, HSM Publisher

2013 was an outstanding year for LOOT, both inside PlayStation Home and beyond it. In coordination with BBC Worldwide, the Doctor Who IP was introduced into Home. Hollywood Hills received significant functionality upgrades (retroactive and free for those who owned the original estate), and was released in a nighttime version as well as with clubhouse variants, both for SCEA and SCEE. The Men In Black IP expanded in Home with new LMO items, Forsaken Planet saw new LMOs deployed, and the year finished with a free promotion from RadioIO.

It gets even better outside of Home. On the PlayStation 3, the Gaiam app was released, and there were significant updates to the Crackle and MLB apps. Also, on Sony Blu-Ray players, the NBA app made its debut. And, further, LOOT made significant progress with Forsaken Planet, as the game was deployed on Ouya and Google Play and had very successful showings at E3, IndieCade and GDC Next.

As part of Sony DADC, the LOOT team may have a big name — but it’s a small team. In order to go in as many directions as we do simultaneously, we run a very high-octane environment and wear several hats simultaneously. In my case, aside from handling production for both apps and Home, I’m the showrunner for the reinvented LOOTcast — which is insanely fun. Putting together each new episode takes a lot of time, but it’s an opportunity to create the kind of dev diary series I’d always wanted to see as a consumer before I got into the industry.

So, to conclude 2013, we decided to do an end-of-year retrospective montage.

There are a bunch of different ways to do such a montage. The obvious choice is to create a sort of sizzle reel, showing off what LOOT accomplished in 2013 — but, to borrow from Ronald D. Moore, it’s all about the characters, stupid. In this case, it’s about the team. Specifically, the moments of camaraderie, shared experience, hard work, goofiness and every other emotion shared during the journey.

Here’s to 2014. The journey has been remarkable so far. And the journey continues.
