Dining On Roadkilled Grasshoppers

by Susan, HSM team writer

When I received the 50’s diner from VEEMEE, it was like I just got a present on Christmas morning, one I had been expecting for years.

I enjoy going out to diners because of the atmosphere and charm they bestow upon a community. Going out to a diner in my youth was something that I enjoyed immensely, and I remember going out to A&W and Sonic’s enough times to keep me in love with them. Diners  have been immortalized in the media with films like Pulp Fiction, Streets of Fire, American Graffiti and of course Diner. American television shows as Mel’s Diner, Seinfeld, Happy Days and the ever popular Food Network Show Diners, Drive-ins and Dives with host Guy Feiri continually emphasize the impact they have on our daily lives.

50s diner

I really think Area-51 is close by!

My Harbour Studio on PlayStation Home has always been utilized as my enormous walk-in closet.  I would head over there to change into a different outfit or to load a space I was heading to. In most public places, it seemed like the process of attempting those two would stop time.

That “closet” disappeared the day Veemee launched the Dolly Diner collection.  Almost instantly, my own personal diner was put together and I even used it as a site location for a video trailer. A couple of photo shoots for this magazine occurred there. The downside of the diner was the limit in item allowance.  Each table setup occupied a minimum of four item slots. Add a couple sodas and some food, and you soon you’re up to using six to eight more. Basically, I thought the space was lacking in charm because I felt it had no real identity due to the limit of 100 items allowed in a personal space.

Along comes the 50’s Diner space, and I couldn’t have been happier. It reeks of personality and charisma, and I honestly don’t know why I thought this but I was half expecting a UFO to streak across the sky. The inside had everything you needed, including a jukebox with no volume control, a working flat top grill and mirrors that showed every imperfection of your makeup. Outside, it had a couple sweet rides that were unfortunately not active items. Too bad! In Home there were no period cars that would be visually correct. The MIB cars were too new in years, but would work chasing that UFO. The motorcycles might work, especially the choppers. And I didn’t see Formula 1 race cars there, either.

Eat my dust !

Eat my dust !

This has all changed with the release by VEEMEE of five LMOs that are perfect for this space. I don’t want to get caught telling tales out of school but these cars are amazing! All of them work perfectly — as the low rider that could be labeled as a “sled” designed by the great George Barris, a ’34 roadster that resembles a car from the movie Grease and a wicked-cool hot rod that screams big block Chevy motor. I can see all three of these parked outside the my 50’s Diner.

And let’s not forget that there are two others LMOs released, which are a “Funny Car” and a Rail Dragster. As a fan of the NHRA (National Hot Rod Association) I giggle at getting the chance to have these.  The cars can be purchased individually. Or take the whole bundle, and have your own private car collection.  I just wish we could drag race for pink slips down that long stretch of dark highway out in front of the diner — winner also gets a vanilla milkshake and a cheeseburger.

"Which Horseman cometh?"

“Which Horseman cometh?”

When driving fast in Home, make sure you have eye protection. Because VEEMEE has also let loose a bunch of insects onto the community.  Tired of waiting for the some type of biblical plague to occur? Then be the master of your own destiny and turn your avatar into a swarm of bees, a flight of dragonflies or even the much-feared swarm of butterflies! If  size matters to you, then you can turn your avatar into one of three giant insects. And these creep me out.

The giant ladybug, grasshopper, praying mantis and ant all look like they have been exposed to some type of radiation leak, possibly released by the local power plant, which is just down the road from the 50’s diner. On the other end of the spectrum, VEEMEE has released some newly designed hatchling companions, and they are so cute. Baby chickens, penguins and raptor dinosaurs can now follow you around Home. All of the items can be purchased as individual pieces like the car LMOs, or you can grab a set from three different bundle options.

What’s an Ollie?

All of the items above can be obtained in either SCEA or SCEE regions, but the last batch of goodies from VEEMEE are just for the people across the pond in the SCEE region for now. Twelve new clothing choices and two LMOs are here for the skater guy or girl looking to stand out. Tank tops, sweaters, t-shirts, dresses, shorts and pants are all part of the second release of the Element skater lifestyle brand. Two new board designs that include new stunts are also available to the Tony Hawk wannabe. And ownership of these boards grants you access to the newly-constructed Acorn Skate Park.

As you can see by this week’s content release from VEEMEE, they are doing an awesome job by keeping the Home community looking stylish while doing a double kick flip. Going back in time with the new style of Hot Rods and race cars should be able to keep any card-holding NHRA member quite happy for months to come, and while I love a swarm of butterflies,  I am thinking I will need to keep my plasma gun charged up in case a colony of giant ants or a swarm of giant grasshoppers decides to focus its attention on me.
