Sizing up the Locomotions
by Susan, HSM team writer
Horses, cows, lions, tigers, dragons, dolphins, camels, planes, trains, automobiles, skateboards, bicycles, go karts, wings, and soaring through the air.
Any way you want to move around in Home is now becoming available to you. Ride some water and act like you’re the Silver Surfer. Have a zombie drag you around the space as you cry out for assistance — which as we all know is futile, because once you’re bitten by a zombie, you’re done for.
The past year or so has seen an exponential increase in the development of locomotion (LMO) type items from a few Home developers. Tired of walking? There’s no need to walk anymore. Jump on a camel, push the square button and trot away. Get into a biplane, and start patrolling the skies over Home. But be prepared for some complaints. As the size of the locomotions increase, so does the rhetoric about them.
Recently I have begun to think LMO means not “locomotion” but Large Mechanical Object. I like using my LOOT/Forsaken Planet zombie to get around. It is fun, and it isn’t so large that it gets in someone’s personal space. I am finding myself having to move around some of the larger LMO’s when chatting with people due to what appears to be a lack of basic etiquette; some guy rolls up in his chopper and wants to chat, but the front end of his bike is literally in my face.
How big is too big? We ask for PSH to be something like the real world, but when it is, people still aren’t satisfied. We asked for animals and vehicles to ride. Now that they are available, I hear people remarking about their size. In Home things tend to be about scale, and you can’t design a horse in Home that isn’t to scale without the forums exploding.
I see that the developers have tried to find a happy medium where larger items are reduced as much as possible while maintaining design integrity. To the people who are all up in arms over their size, I ask this — how small can you make a plane, chopper or dragon and still have a viable commodity? It is up to the community to use a little-known thing called courtesy when using the larger locomotion items and engaging people on Home.

Great article Sue.
There will always be some someone that is never satisfied.
I love my boulder just for its size!!!
